The State of the Union

You know I miss those unscripted days of politics when the President's State of the Union speech wasn't released prior to his giving it, and the opposing party had to have a brilliant pundit on standby ready to scramble into a rebuttle.

France's First Lady

I find it fascinating that France's President had a 'domestic partner' who was known as France's First Lady. For all my wildly liberal friends who don't believe in the institution of marriage ("Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?" -Groucho Marx) I know that you will start sputtering that marriage is just a piece of paper, yada yada yada.

However: Since the French President cheated on her with a movie star, and marriage doesn't define a First Lady in France, does that make the movie star the new First Lady? Or does she actually have to move in with him before she becomes one? And what if he decides to take in a new "First Lady" every month? Inquiring minds want to know.

Overheard at the Grocery Store

BREAD VENDOR (to little old lady): Well you see, ma'am, the loaves are smaller now cuz we did some research and found out that most people never finished their larger loaves of bread and were always complaining.

LITTLE OLD LADY (slightly bewildered): Ohhh. I see...

so in a year, it will be:

BREAD VENDOR: Well you see, ma'am, research showed that everyone wanted more fiber in their diet so it was just logical for us to pair up with the sawmills and add sawdust to the batter.

LITTLE OLD LADY: Well I guess I won't need Metamucil any longer...

Yes: The food companies are working hard to convince us all that the smaller packaging is somehow due to popular demand. The reality is that prices are going up, and portions are going down.
