6 Strange Things About Me

KristieD just tagged me. This is a pleasant meme, because it's short and sweet and interesting. It's not asking what my favorite color is or what I do first thing in the morning. Plus, I'm really tired after a weekend-long trip to St. Augustine (which I'll cover in the next couple days)!

6 Strange Things About Me

1. I trained to sing opera, but get stage fright singing (but not acting!)
2. I have had all types of exotic pets, including a chinchilla. I don't recommend most of them, and I certainly don't recommend chinchillas, which (although cute) are basically large, spastic gerbils in really nice fur coats.
3. I am acrophobic (fearful of heights), but have no problem flying.
4. My ancestors include royalty, a famous pirate, a horse thief, a hooker, and a civil war deserter. Much of the same, I think.
5. I can't stand drinks with sugar in them, except for milkshakes (which aren't entirely a drink anyway. They're more of a dessert, really).
6. I dated James Marsden for a short time. There's nothing to tell about it: I'm not bitter or attempting to rationalize, but it truly wasn't of great importance in my life. My son thinks it's cool that I dated Cyclops, though. ;o)

Now, each and every one of you have three choices:

1. Post your own meme in the responses here.
2. Post your own meme in your blog and give us a link.
3. Comment on how marvellous mine is.

I am sooooo Jealous....LOL

Saur♥Kraut said...

TSB, what, about my ancestors? Or the sugary drinks? ;o) Teasing. There's nothing to be jealous of. He's just an ordinary guy, truthfully.

Dating James Marsden was a strange thing in your life?

I did this one probably about a year back and am too lazy to dig through the archives to find it. So I will just say the strangest thing about me according to popular opinion from those that know me. I grew up without a television set in the house until I was twenty. Fortunately I had plenty of books.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Ed, well, I don't have a large list of celebrity boyfriends, so perhaps it should be filed under "unique". I was only allowed limited TV when I was a kid, so I had a similar experience and learned to read voraciously! I still can't be bothered with TV; the inane commercials really try my patience.

Saur,

James is very hot. You are very very lucky. If I were Gay I would want to go out with him too.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Mr. Gator, you have your hands full with the cheerleaders, anyway. ;o)

mal said...

OK,,,I think yours is marvelous...BTW whos is James Marsden?

Saur♥Kraut said...

Mallory, click on his name and you can read about him. He wasn't well known at one time, but he's getting progressively more so.

Grant said...

I did this one a while ago as part of this post.

My ancestors include a civil war deserter and a complete lunatic. My sister was researching it until she discovered Otis, a man whose exploits were still remembered by the older members of our family. He died in an asylum in the 1800's. My sister quit looking after she discovered him.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Grant, isn't it funny how we often see our ancestors as some reflection upon us? As if their contribution of egg or sperm had any impact on our own existence. I admit to being somewhat proud of my piratical ancestor, and the royalty, but it does me no earthly good whatsoever (except that I have great sealegs and never get seasick, and I have expensive tastes). Interesting post you wrote! I never had the impression you were a Satanist, just quirky (as many of us are).

Heather said...

The sad thing is, I don't think I could come up with anything nearly as interesting as yours.

Hope you had a great weekend.

I did a similar tag a couple months ago, but it was only five things, so I'll add a sixth. My hometown (where I spent significant time in school, graduated high school, and where my parents still live) is Stillwater, Oklahoma, though James wasnt even in high school when I left town for good.

Kristie said...

thanks for the wonderful information! i had trouble thinking of Strange things. interesting-yes, strange...hmmm. Good job on yours tho!

Saur♥Kraut said...

Daveawayfromhome, peanut butter and pickle sandwiches actually sound good. I must be hungry. I assume they're dill pickles, or are we talking sweet(which would gross me out, I dunno why). My boyfriend also talks in his sleep, and recently asked his daughter crossly (when she thought he was awake) "What do I LOOK like? A GRAPE?" We are still trying to puzzle that out. I mentioned you in Barbara's blog today. I think you'll be interested in it. You should check it out.

KristieD, yours was interesting! I liked it, and I learned something about you, too. Don't be too hard on yourself! I think it's very interesting that you played violin. I played viola for a while, and my brother played concert violin.

Heather, Oh sure you could. I'm just ultra weird, that's all, so all sorts of weird factoids come to mind quickly.

"My ancestors include royalty, a famous pirate, a horse thief, a hooker, and a civil war deserter."

we must be related somehow.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Rev, so you have a delightful smorgasbord of ancestry too, huh?

daveawayfromhome said...

Peanut butter and (yes) dill pickle sandwichs are da bomb.

I share a couple of those unusualalities (is that a word?? it is now!)

I too have a fear of heights but have no problem flying.

My only claim to fame that I know of is a pretty good one: I am a direct descendant of one Mr. Jefferson Davis!

Saur♥Kraut said...

Mike A, I think I see a family resemblance!

Daveawayfromhome, I actually may try one tomorrow, then... After all, if it's good enough for Kinsey Millhone (heroine of Sue Grafton's), then it's good enough for ME. I've been meaning to try them.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Mike A, or try this one!

Ellen said...

I'm just the opposite with you on number 3. No fear of heights... but major ones on flying.

One question though.... no sugar in your iced tea?

Saur♥Kraut said...

Ellen, no. It just grosses me out, and makes me thirstier.

United We Lay said...

Wow, I'm really the only one doing this?

1. I eloped a year before my "real" wedding and got married in St. Augustine.

2. I'm related to 2 Presidents, someone who came over on the Mayflower, General Robert E. Lee, and someone who came over during the Irish Potato famine.

3. I was raised Republican and Catholic and teach at a military school. (which is strange only if you've read my blog).

4. I can't swim. I sink.

5. I believe in ESP but not god.

6. I'm married to a musician but haven't been to a concert since I was 13.

Nihilistic said...

As my Grandparents told me over and over again when I was a kid - Our Ancestors include Betsey Ross...I don't know why they thought a kid of 7 or 8 would really care about this...

Michael K. Althouse said...

No sugar in my iced tea either. I like red Rose the best!

Like the new "heartsy" SaurKraut. We have a couple of things in common. I too am terrified of height, but love to fly. I've heard I have a couple of not so savory relatives. But, my mouth began to water at DaveAways peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich! I adore them. Two pieces of "white" bread, peanut butter sparingly smeared on both and thinly sliced dill pickles in between. I highly recommend! I started eating them when I was pregnant and have loved them ever since.

Fun post!

Oh, yes. Never drink sugary drinks. Ever. I like to chew my calories and the sugar leaves a film in your mouth.

Whistle Britches said...

I dated James Marsden too.

But that's not the strange thing about me.

My ancestors crawled out of the side of a hollow in eastern kentucky. Legend has it that some are still stuck knee deep in the muck there and refuse to leave. I think a recent documentary also proves this.

I think UnitedweLay's #4 problem would be solved if #5 happened.

I have trained to be a cage fighter.

The last one was a lie.

I am not really a liar.

michelle said...

What happened to my post Saur? Did I not get the word verifcation right and exited too soon perhaps?

I had mentioned that I pick option #3.

Paul Nichols said...

You're gonna luv me. I tagged myself. And have you read The Sirens of Titan yet?

Saur♥Kraut said...

Paul, I DID! I thought it was good, but (I hate to say it because you love it) I wasn't all that enthralled with it. It was obviously something that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was heavily influenced by, however! It's funny how there are times that another author comes along and improves on a former novel. Other times, it falls flat. A great fave of mine is The Complete Enchanter (a compilation of 3 books) by DeCamp and Pratt. I've seen others try to imitate it, but no one comes close. Ever heard of it? And I'm going to come over and check out your blog!

Michelle! You chicken! ;o)

Unca Joe, United We Lay would probably agree with you. Funny, Jimmy never mentioned you - and I'm sure you were memorable! Your ancestors sound right sophisty-kated.

Mr. Fabulous, why thank you! I can't think of anything mega strange - I crack my knuckles, but that's hardly weird. Annoying, yes...weird, no.

Acton Bell, I get bored easily. ;o)

Kathleen, exactly right about the drinks! And I'm trying the sandwich tomorrow. Mmm! It really DOES sound good!

Mike A, you know, my ex sister in law would only drink Red Rose! She also collected those little figurines that came in it. She swore by it! I try all types, to be truthful, and probably prefer Madagascar Red by Celestial Seasonings.

Nihilistic, Betsy Ross, hmmm? Got any old memorabilia of hers? Why do those pesky museums get so greedy and snatch them up??? We DO have a memento of my ancestor's - something Sothebys has been slavering after for years.

Reverberate, I wouldn't have recognized his name, either! He's growing in popularity, apparently. It's rather odd, to see him on the big screen as Cyclops (X-Men).

UWL, I didn't know you were married in St. Augustine! How interesting! And it makes sense to believe in ESP, especially if you don't believe in God. There are some things that are "unearthly" and one or the other explanation will have to suffice. Which two presidents? I knew the rest! How are you feeling lately, by the way?

Jamie Dawn said...

Marvelous! Bravo! :)

My brother has the same thing about heights. He went up to the top of the Stratosphere in Vegas and about had a heart attack just looking out the windows, but he flies without fear.

Lee Ann said...

I would have imagined that you could sing and or act!
Wow, chincilla? If they are like giant gerbils, I would not be able to handle it.
I have never been diagnosed with acrophobia, but I am somewhat fearful of heights and I DO NOT like to fly.
OMG....James Marsden is SO SO HOT!
Wow, I think it is cool too!

Saur♥Kraut said...

Lee Ann, But Jimmy didn't really have much of a personality, to be completely honest. He was very intense, however. Chinchillas are definately nuts, I'd never get another one. As for flying, I think it's cuz it FEELS like I have my feet on the ground with no danger of falling. And I try very hard to avoid thinking about that!

Jamie Dawn, thank you, thank you! Your brother probably feels as I do: with our feet on the ground in an enclosed space it doesn't SEEM that we could fall even though we know it's a possibility.

michelle said...

Well you see, there is nothing strange about me. Therefore I could not participate in this tagging.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Michelle, I'm just happy to see you at all! You've been quiet of late.

Jenn said...

First I like your heart in your name.

Opera? Wow!! I have to ask, what is your favorite piece and singer? Mine - Renata Tebaldi singing O mio babbino caro

My post is here, but you knew that. :o)

Dating cyclops is cool. And yes, you do have 6 cool but interestingly marvellous things.

High Power Rocketry said...

Id say that guy was lucky to date a person as hot and smart as you.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Alex, that is an amazingly sweet and chivalrous thing to say, and I really appreciate it! :D

Emma, Renata was one of the greats. My latest fave is Mario Frangoulis singing Un'anima Sola. He is incredibly talented! Still, Andrea Bocelli's Ave Maria is the most amazing version I've heard. And I'm a great fan of Sarah Brightman, despite some people accusing her of "pop" opera.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Susie, *LOL* I'll bet you can't top having a great aunt as a hooker, can you? Can you???

Three Score and Ten or more said...

My paternal ancestors were stolid swedes and the maternal ones were, more or less minor british aristocrats and American farmers. Janet (my spouse) is decended from the brother of Johnny Appleseed (Chapman was the name)and British Royalty (Good King John who was eternally pestered by that naughty brother of his Richard Lionheart). She threw herself away on a commoner. When I can begin to think again I might try the challenge or meme or whatever.

Saur♥Kraut said...

3 Score & 10, thanks for sharing! I look forward to seeing it! My parents have "good" pedigrees and mom and I would qualify to be in The Daughters of The American Revolution, but our family sees it as rather pointless and snobbish, so we've never bothered to do it (my apologies to any non-snobbish DARs).

United We Lay said...

Feeling great, actually. A little tired, but otherwise just fine. Zachary Taylor and James Madison were the two Presidents, and our top two names for girls are Taylor and Madison. We eloped to St. Auguastine, so few people knew we got married there (just the nortary, the photographer, his assistant, and us), but it was the best day of my life, until my husband got food poisoning the evening of our wedding. You never know with crab!

Saur♥Kraut said...

United We Lay, sounds like a wonderful wedding. Too bad about the food poisoning; the restaurant Shells used to be notorious for that, and I got very sick there once. I love the names you have picked out, mostly because of the historical significance for you. Are they in the running if you have a boy, too?

United We Lay said...

Taylor is, but I think Julian is at the top for a boy. We wanted to pick strong names. Until we're able to identify the gender, we're keeping the list short.
