The Beginning of the Trip to St. Augustine

We decided to take off for St. Augustine this past weekend. I put the decision off to the last moment, but everyone was dying to go. This was unusual for SaurKid, who has matured a great deal in the last year. In the past, his ultimate goal was to live and die with a PlayStation 2 controller in his hand. I had mixed feelings about going, and I was also not looking forward to driving 3 1/2 hours there. Still, the thought of the beautiful old town was very tempting. In the end, the town won.

We left mid-morning, with little rush and the knowlege that we'd still arrive there in time to see some things. We drove at 80 mph from the Tampa Bay Area to Orlando, where traffic always jams to a near-stop for miles on end.

I think the hardest part about being in Orlando is fighting with yourself; because Orlando has become a nightmare destination due to the abominable traffic. All you think to yourself is "what if I just go around all these cars and run up the emergency lane for a little bit? It will really shave off some time!" At the point where my inner voice had almost needled me into doing it, I saw a broken-down car in the emergency lane and realized it was a good thing I hadn't tried it.

I believe we lost at least 45 minutes to the usual Orlando Traffic Jam. I don't know how the citizens there stand it, because it's a daily occurrence. Perhaps those of you in other cities experience it, too, but it's a rarity in Florida (so far!). They have plenty of land: Why don't they expand the roads???

Then we continued on toward Daytona Beach, passed a massive Harley Davidson shop, and continued up the stretch to St. Augustine.

Did I mention that I drive stick shift? I didn't think so. This will become very important later in the story. As you can guess, my legs were already sore from the constant stop-&-go in hellish Orlando.

When we finally reached St. Augustine we made a wrong turn and headed for the beach there. That's how we discovered that there's a lesser-known and smaller fort there: Fort Matanzas.

This is how Ft. Matanzas appeared in the 1870s

Ft. Matanzas (Matanzas is Spanish for "slaughters") was initially built in 1741. The name is much older than the fort, based on the bloody slaughter of 450 French Protestants in 1565, who refused to convert to Catholicism. Restoration on the fort began in 1916 and finished around 1940, with this result:

This is how Ft. Matanzas appears today

Because we had so little time, we chose to not take the ferry over to Ft. Matanzas. We were content to look across the water at it, and returned to our car.

Part 2 is tomorrow.

You have to get up mighty early to be first on this blog! Good morning Saur! Your trip reminds me of so many places here in Now (that the rain has stopped) beautiful California. The traffic is horendous in every major metropolitan area. Many of us forget, however, the beauty that lies beyond the metropolis. The gorgeous country side and the Sierra foothills. The Northern coast, the redwoods and the forgotten gold rush ghost towns. There are miles and miles of backroads just waiting to be discovered (speaking of Harleys). Spring is finally here!

Having lived near several freeway expansion projects over the course of my life, expanding them does not work. As soon as the new expanded section is open, more people drive it, more people buy houses further away thinking that their commute will be the same and in a very short time, it is just as congested as the original less laned road. I've seen it happen time and again.

From my limited experience in the state of Florida, everybody stands in line to do everything, including driving down the freeways. Your state is horribly over crowded, especially when I compare it to my sparsely populated state.

I rarely find myself in slow traffic here...one good point about the midwest I guess.

Looks like a solid place to visit. You want traffic??? Come to Toronto, the three main highways are just stupid at rush hour.

It seems like there's never enough time to fully explore places. I hate that rushed feeling I get on vacation.

That reminds me, I've been meaning to take a day off to revisit the New Echota Cherokee town in Northern Georgia.

as for the roads in orlando-- i dont live in orlando, but close. (i go to UCF)...they are widening the roads thruout the city, but traffic is worse during the construction, and then you have bottlenecking to worry about where the part of the road that was widened comes out to the part of the road that wasnt. It sucks all around here. Poor planning, thats for sure.

Sounds like you had an interesting vacation weekend, cant wait to hear the rest of it.

And that is why went to grandma's for Easter!

Traffic is ditto nightmare in Atlanta, and we have an HOV lane (which nobody uses). They are constantly working on the roads to improve them, but growth has exploded faster than they expected and they can't keep up with it all.

I went to St. Augustine years ago, and it was a lovely city with lots of old time charm. Glad you had a chance to take in a visit. Can't wait for part two, myself!

Only 3 1/2 hours to St. Augustine? Thats nothing! It is a good 6 to 7 hour drive for me to get there. Maybe more.

Orlando traffic on a bad day is like Miami traffic everyday. And then lets not forget about Broward County and Palm Beach County! If you leave Dade County in the afternoon on a weekday and want to take I-95 north - you WILL shoot yourself in the head. The Turnpike is a little better but not much.

45 minutes in traffic is a blessing. Sometimes it takes me 30 minutes to get to work - 10 miles away!

And now for the shocker. I have NEVER GONE TO ST. AUGUSTINE! Some Floridian I am huh? I have driven past the place, but I never got off I-95.

Traffic sucks!!!
Whenever I visit my brother in S. CA, I get annoyed at the traffic. I'm not used to it, and I don't want to be.

Loved my trips to St. Augustine. The traffic is really bad in Orlando. Coming from a S.CA girl, that is something. One reason I avoid it like the plague.

I love experiencing trips vicariously. As you and I both know the adventures of Dan were terrific fun. (Just enjoyed his latest trip to view the wildflowers.)

The last time I went to St. Augustine I stayed at a B&B. Very fun! Just a short trip up the coast is another great historical city, Savannah.

I am looking forward to tomorrows entry.

May I recommend that the next time you visit St. Augustine, enter from the north side--from Jacksonville. Then you won't have to put up with all that Orlando traffic. That's what we do.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Paul, tough to do when you're coming from the Tampa Bay Area, though! ;o)

Kathleen, I really enjoyed Dan's blog too. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a blog where people could write collectively about their trips?

Jamie Dawn, I hate bad traffic too! It really tries your patience, doesn' it???

Lazy Iguana, yeah, Miami is The Hellish Traffic Capital of the World, sharing the honors with NY City. You've NEVER been to St. Augustine? I'm really shocked, because it's right up your alley!!!

Saur♥Kraut said...

Ellen, it IS a gorgeous city. Too bad you live in Atlanta. It's ALMOST as bad as Orlando and Miami.

Michelle, what? And miss out on the drive?

KristieD, I'll bet you leave with plenty of time to spare, seeing as how the traffic's not getting any better...

Grant, I wish I'd spared more time. We're planning on going back in the summer so that we can thoroughly explore, but we wanted to get the spots that will get hot out of the way before the summer heat wave. What's this town you mentioned?

Saur♥Kraut said...

Scott, then I will definately avoid Toronto. But you know what? In some states/cities there is good public transportation, but Florida is simply not equipped that way. Perhaps you have good alternatives to cars? We surely don't! :P

Scott, an excellent point!

Ed, you're right about the expansion! As for Florida lines, we really don't queue up that much in general. You're probably thinking of the major amusement parks, but you have to remember that they're populated with tourists from all over the world. Now, there are definately some overgrown areas (Miami and Orlando being the worst). I'm sad to say the Tampa Bay Area's getting there.

Reverberate, what a pity! YOu should really go if and when you get the chance.

Mike A, you know, I found myself longing for a motorcycle, which can sweep through traffic like a scythe through wheat. I hope you start taking pics of your weekend journeys that you mention.

That's a fort? My forts were always much cooler. I made them out of boxes and sheets and lots and lots of duct tape.

Deb said...

Let me say this. We vacation only an hour and a half away from us in the Hamptons--which is on Long Island. It takes us about 6 hours to get there due to traffic.

Sucks ass BIG time! I hate traffic.

Very interesting pictures!

I've been out of the loop lately---wanted to say hello and see whatchya' been up to girly.

High Power Rocketry said...

That fort looks great :) I should go there some day.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Alex, wait'll you see the big one!!!

Deb, hey hon! Same old, same old. I wish differently! This trip was a nice change... I just wish I could hop on a plane and go somewhere NEXT weekend. Come to think of it, I just MAY!

Eddo, your forts sound MUCH better, but somewhat smaller and less fortified. And wait'll you see the big fort!

Saur,

I’ve only done St. Augustine as a chaperone.

You have to be really cautious in St. Augustine. The illegal immigrants who clean the hotel rooms target the people who look like they have money. Always dress as a bum.

I’ve always wondered how long it takes to get the stink out of a coquina castle.

The forts are so cool. I know it must have been great fun, except for the bad traffic. Once, I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in Houston, Texas on the night before Thanksgiving. 2 hours of stop and go on my way to the airport to pick up my Dad. I had a stick shift, so I completely know what you went through...I am so sorry!

Nihilistic said...

Ohhhh Man...I would have had to take the ferry! That's just plain fun!

We don't have traffic jams up here. If I see 5 or 6 cars on the road and I can't pull in between, I say to the kids, "look at all the traffic!" Atlanta was insane! My husband went 8.2 miles to work and it took 45 minutes! The roads he drove didn't even make the morning traffic reports because they were not among the worst in town! We could never live there again!

Cool fort BTW...

Thanks for sharing your trip! Sounds like an interesting destination.

Yeah, traffic is tough. I saw someone get a ticket for doing the breakdown lane shortcut -- that would be my luck, so I don't do it.

I remember the bitg fort there. I got in trouble as a boyscout because we climbed the walls. Actually my friend got in toruble. I was already up when the ranger came around and caught him halfway up the wall.

That's the only problem with holiday weekends ... everyone else is also on holiday, and the roads are a mess ... too much traffic, agro, etc.
The holiday photos look amazing.
Take care, Meow

Saur♥Kraut said...

Meow, take a mini holiday when it's less likely to be a problem? That's what I intend to start doing.

Exmi, get out! How cool is that???

AP3 'zactly!

Notsocranky, traffic jams like this could cause people to take up drinking!!!

Susie, excellent points and I couldn't have said it better, myself!

Nihilistic, we definately will next time!

Lee Ann, when you read my last post, you really will be sorry for me!!! ;o)

Mr. Gator, *LOL* Perhaps they bleached it first...
