Sudoku

OK, I'm hooked, and my mom's a dealer. I went over to see my parents last night, and she introduced me to sudoku puzzles.

Have you ever tried one? Whew, are they addictive! The best way I can describe these is that they're crossword puzzles - in numbers form.

Try to get the hang of it by solving a couple puzzles first. Then, suddenly a light clicks on and you're a goner! Don't give up, as I almost did. I'm glad that I hung in there.

But last night I'm struggling as SaurKid, Boy Genius, took to the puzzles like a duck takes to water. It's a little off-putting to be so easily outdistanced by your 12-year old, no matter how high his IQ is.

If you'd like to give it a try, the link above is the best one I've found online. I prefer printing out the puzzles instead of doing a puzzle on the computer. Oh, and use a pencil - put away that pen. Trust me.

P.S. That link really is fantastic. You're allowed to 'pencil in' guesses at this particular site. It's the next best thing to doing it by hand.

I love them! My first contact was on the subway I noticed many people playing the same strange box with numbers in it.

I play online sometimes, and I love how hard a "super easy" game it. I cant even imagine what a hard game would be like.

Hi, my name is Ed and I'm a Soduko-holic. I first got addicted four months ago when the local paper first started carrying them on a daily basis. At first, I could only do the easiest "white belt" levels but not I can do them all, even the "black belt" levels. I can't stop until I do. I even use pen so on the rare occasion I screw up, I beat my head against the wall because I don't get the same rush from having completed the puzzle. I hopelessly and utterly addicted. That is why I am not going anywhere near your provided link. Where do I go for help with my addiction?

Is it like cryptograms? I love those types of puzzles-----in a peaceful state of mind. Otherwise I’m baffled. Those kind of games really make you think though.

Anyway, I need your help Saur!!! Here’s a puzzle you can figure out... I am asking for help on my blog to see if anyone can figure out what I can do regarding my problem. I thought you would have some knowledge with this—being that it is linked with ‘anxiety’---and I am assuming you have clients with these issues.

Help me? :(

Yeah... tell me about addicting! This is what I do every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during my biology lecture! Haha!

Not for me. I don't recognize any of those things. What are they, numbers?

Good night Saur, this is all I need...a new challenge. Thanks a lot!

Old Hoss, I must've been visiting your site while you were visiting mine. Yeah, they're numbers. The idea is actually simple: all numbers are 1-9. You can't repeat a number in a row or column, or box. I may not be explaining it properly, but if you go to that site, I think it will be easier to understand.

Brianne, ;o) Those of us who were college profs are reeling right now...

Deb, I went and commented liberally!

Ed & Alex, it's crazy, isn't it? Wow is it fun! It's a mix of crossword puzzle and treasure hunt...

Michelle, ;o) I thought so, since you never called. I figured you were recovering. *jealous*

Oh, dear. Another distraction. I went to the site, conquered beginner and now I am lost for good!

Thanks, I think.

It was a blast. The kids spent the night at grandma's and we got in late and slept in.

Another good site is Fiendish Sudoku. It has new puzzles every day at five difficulty levels, and the puzzle designs are hand-made, not computer-generated random like most other sites. Fiendish Sudoku can give hints and step-by-step solutions, plus it has a choice of three grid sizes. If you prefer to print out the puzzles, it has a choice of five grid sizes to print at.

Your 12 year old Boy Genius may enjoy Samurai Sudoku. Quite a challenge!

Those puzzles are very fun! The first time I did one, a lady next to me asked me what it was and I said, "It's a new kind of puzzle called So-du-ki." Notice, I didn't get a single syllable of it correct. It was funny at the time.

My mom is hooked on these too. She's always been a crossword freak, so this was the logical next step. I, on the other hand, am awful at them. Really. I will give it another shot tho, just for you, but i dont have any expectations of succeeding. :)

I tried them. I couldn't get a clue, much less hookedon them. And I adore crossword puzzles! Does that make me weird?

Saur,

I hand out Sudoku's at most meetings. It just kills me that this hot Indian woman with great hair always wins.

I had never seen that before. It looks very cool!

I'm hooked on these things also. My favorite website is websudoku.com. It even tracks your best times and lets you know how you compare to other people. I also print them out to take on trips. I'm pretty good at the hard ones, but the "evil" puzzles give me trouble.

I intend to be hooked...just don't have the time or ability to concentrate right now.

I added it to my favorites though, and will get back to it later,

Thanks for a new mind grower, I used to do "magic squares, but not 9 at once.

What no answers today???

Saur♥Kraut said...

Susie, well, it definately can preoccupy us!

Michelle, just swamped...*sigh*

Valerie, you'll be glad you did!

Not So Cranky, I HATE the evil ones. I almost threw my new book out yesterday. I keep telling myself it's mistaken. I DID find ONE that was TRULY wrong, and I was sooooo happy.

Lee Ann, it's fun! Try it! Joinnnnn ussssss

Gator, *rolling eyes*

Miss Celania and Barbara, well, it took me a couple to really get the hang of it. And it's much more fun (for me) to do it with someone else...

KristieD, ...but will she thank you for that? ;o)

Jamie Dawn, *LOL*

KristieW thanks for the link!!!

Michelle, glad you had fun. I thought you would!

Jules, it really isn't math, though I had the same reaction you had when I first saw it. You could substitute the numbers for letters and have the same result.

Mr. Fabulous, hook...line...and sinker

Dddragon, I would've figured if anyone was good at these, you would be.

Eddo, aren't they marvellous???

Kathleen, Oh yeah! You're hooked, too!
