Parenting

From my friend Pam Settle: There are some things that you never say until you're parent, like "STOP LICKING THE CAKE!!!"
-----
I just taught a 6-year old boy the word "dork". I'm sure his mother will be eternally grateful.
-----
A kid recently claimed he's 'emotionally damaged' by a time-out room. What options do we have left anymore?! Teachers can't send them to the Principal's office too many times or they look bad. They don't respond to yelling. No one can spank them or even lay a hand on them to hold them down when they're out of control. If the schools call the cops, the cops and the schools look bad. How about we start holding parents accountable for their kids' behavior by giving them tickets when their kids act up? If the tickets aren't paid in a timely manner, they lose their drivers' licenses.
-----
ME: Hi honey! How was school?
LIVVIE (6 years old): Didn't you hate changing for PE when you were a kid?
ME: I sure did!
LIVVIE: From flats to sneakers, then back to flats. *sigh*
ME: What sport did you play today?
LIVVIE: I can't remember! It started with an "S" and ended with a "P" but it wasn't soup.

Racism?

I was at a Walmart standing in line behind a young black guy buying booze. They wanted his ID and he told them he didn't have it. When they said they couldn't sell it without an ID, he said loudly and antagonistically "WHAT? You are RACIST! THAT'S RACIST!" The woman looked frightened and obviously couldn't respond because of her job. So I spoke up equally loudly and said "How DARE you! THAT is racist! You should be ashamed of yourself, pulling The Race Card when you want to get away with something."

The guy did a double take and then said "Lady, that is NONE of your business."

"Yes, it IS my business and it's the business of all of us in here to speak up when we're forced to put up with such racism," I said stoutly. Others in the line nodded. One girl in the back (who was also black) said "unbelievable, dude."

And if we want to talk minority status, I'm firmly in the middle of it. When I want to get away with something, I never say "WHAT? You are SEXIST. YOU'RE SEXIST!" even when someone IS. You never win respect by demanding it. To be respected, one must be...dare I say it...respectable!

Critters

Should I be alarmed that my kitten is increasingly pretending to gut my hand with her hind legs? I am sensing not-so-latent aggression. I am going to start sleeping with a knife under my pillow...
-----
When the kitten was a 4 week old baby, I was always worried I might kill her accidentally. Now that she is 6 months old, I am always worried I might kill her on purpose.
-----
I am absolutely amazed that most kittens survive into adulthood. She creates the mess and then attacks the broom that cleans it up! And... when she can't attack the broom, she launches from the bed and leaps on my head as I'm stooped over. I am a nervous wreck.
-----
Am I the only one that double checks the dryer to make sure the kitten hasn't somehow snuck in?
 -----
So Evil Kitty comes up to me and affectionately rubs on me. I pick her up and she sweetly swipes at my jugular, claws extended. My mother's dire predictions may end up being right. Send help.
 -----
Evil Kitty has discovered that when I whistle, the dogs get a treat. Now she lines up with everyone else, just like a dog. Watching them all eat peanut butter is worth buying the occasional jar.
 -----
...aaaaand speaking of cats (we were, weren't we?) how many of you have cats that climb onto the toilet seat and carefully lower their front paws down to dabble in the water, then take a long cool sip, and come and jump up on you? I thought cats were supposed to be afraid of the water.
 -----
My dog left his stuffed rat toy on my bed. Imagine my initial surprise when I walked into my bedroom to see it...
-----
Life is better when you have a clean little silky dog curled up next to you sleeping soundly.
-----
Dog Water Dishes: I spent a long time at Petsmart one night looking over water dishes. Did you know how many varieties there are? You can spend over $100 on water fountains and filtration systems for animals that lick their butts and eat the most putrid things they can find.
-----
I got up the other day and found my otherwise peaceful 2 little koi ate their fishy brethren. I thought koi were peaceful! Maybe they were "sleeper koi".
 -----
After discussing alligators with a friend, I am reminded of when I went to an informative lecture on myths about gators. One myth is that you should run in a zigzag while being chased by a gator. The reality is that it simply slows you down and makes it easier for the gator. I am reluctant to share this with most of you because if we're on a nature walk and a gator starts chasing us, I'm hoping he gets you first. I love you and all that, but every man for himself.
-----
If you have a parrot and you don't teach it to say "Help! They've turned me into a parrot!", you are wasting everyone's time.

The "Son of God" Movie: Give it a Pass and Rent "The Passion of the Christ" Again

I saw the Son of God  movie last night and was amazed to see how good the dentistry was back then: Everyone had shiny, perfect white teeth*. And Mary's plastic surgeon must have been renowned: I'll bet she had the same plastic surgeon as Cleopatra. Or Steven Tyler. (In fact, come to think of it, she looked exactly like Steven Tyler. I had to double check to make sure they weren't related). She got to play Mary because her husband was the producer.
This wasn't a well-constructed movie. Instead, it was a strung-together series of vignettes. I left with the feeling that everyone was rushing to film the scene and move on to the next as quickly as possible. I suspect they took their production notes from Angry Alien Productions, famous for their movie summaries in 30 seconds (check out Gone With the Wind or Jurassic Park).

Perhaps it's also easy to miss the agony and the ecstasy when you're busy listing all the mistakes that were made throughout the movie. For instance, Jesus didn't lovingly grasp a child's face and tell her that the entire temple was going to be torn down and not one stone would remain on another while she giggled insanely. That would be...weird. No, instead he had that chat with his disciples (see Mark 13).

And, sorry to break it to all you feminists (hey, I'm a conservative feminist so I'm in sympathy here) but Mary Magdalene wasn't just one of the guys. She couldn't have trekked around with Jesus and the apostles because she was female. Not only is she NOT mentioned in the Bible as having traveled with them, but we also know that Jewish women still valued their virtue back then and a woman wouldn't have spent night and day in a nomadic lifestyle with men she wasn't directly related to. Then there's the little problem of her monthly cycle: It kept women from being portable. You see, they didn't have tampons back then, and didn't have disposable pads. Instead, women had rags, and going through the nuisance of soiling multiple rags, washing them daily, etc., wasn't something a woman could do in public. Also, according to Judaic law, women had to go off on their own when they were going through that "time of the month." Mary could hardly have said "Hey guys, have fun. I'll be in that tent menstruating for a week or so. I'll catch up with you when I'm done."

I've heard the reviews: People have left the theatre crying. I can only say that if they did, it's simply because they stubbed their toe on the way out. When I saw Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, I cried. Oh, how I cried. But this one fails to capture both the glory and the pathos. But what I kept asking myself was: Why? Somehow they were caught up in the execution of the film and forgot to delve into the gut-wrenching reality, faith, and hope that it was based on.

P.S. I have had a recent rebuttle that I wish to share with you, since it needs to be said:

Some of the observations in your posted review are good, but I think you are wrong in your statements about the women.  Women traveled quite freely (They were not Moslems, you know) and would not have been shut up in a room when they had their periods.

They also were present at such events as the feeding of the 4000. The Mary who anointed Jesus' feet and wiped His feet with her hair in John 12 was Mary (respectable, and the sister of Lazarus and Martha)--not to be confused with the woman who anointed Jesus in Luke chapter 7.
Notice from the verses below how the women traveled with Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him--not spending the night in the same place, of course, but probably with Him daily:  Matthew 27:55; Mark 15:41; Luke 8:2; and Luke 23:55.

*Except for Matthew, bless his heart. I guess he didn't get the memo. I've seen mangy Pekingese dogs with better teeth).

Always Collect the License Plate

If you accidentally let someone drive off with your license plate after you've let them have your car (as in, say, a divorce settlement for instance) and they don't register the car as theirs even though you've registered the sale with the Dept. of Motor Vehicles... and they keep driving around on the old plate even though the DMV has recalled the plate... you still keep getting their parking tickets and tolls.

That means you have endless fun making phone calls and sending letters to prove to everyone that it isn't your responsibility. The police will not take a report because the plate isn't lost (it's whereabouts are known) and it wasn't stolen (since the ex was driving the Jeep when he left). The ticket and toll people tell you that they can do nothing without a police report.

The resulting mayhem is as much fun as a 3 Stooges all-day movie extravaganza.

Tats

I recently saw a heavily tattooed shirtless guy strolling down the street, which made me reflect on how nature makes dangerous or unpleasant things very colorful as a way of saying "hands off, you don't want this."
-------------------------------------
CHRIS: Do you have a tattoo?
ME: NO I don't have a tattoo. What kind of weird question is that?
CHRIS: Well you SEEM like a girl that would have a tattoo.

Oddly I once thought of having a tat. I was 16 and my best friend's mom was willing to sign off on the consent form. I ALMOST did it. Almost. And yet if I had, to this day I would still have a unicorn on my shoulder. Thank goodness I chickened out.
------------------------------------
A grimy girl covered in prison tats walks into an elegant business office with a strapless midriff tee that reads "Sex Education Instructor" and Daisy Duke shorts.

Ew. Just... ew.

Valentine's Day

My Valentine this year was Jackson, who's 8 years old. So while his parents were off on their date, Jackson and I painted the town red, as my grandmother used to say... (come to think of it, what the heck does that mean, anyway?!)

You know, it grieves me to see so many people grousing about Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day isn't just about romantic love. When I was growing up, we were always my parents' valentines. A couple days before Valentine's Day, Mom would break out the construction paper and doilies and markers and we would sit around with Mom and Dad designing valentines for each other and our grandparents and other loved ones. It was a precious time and we always looked forward to it. And every Valentine's Day we would come to the breakfast table to find a small box of chocolates at each plate with a card from Mom and Dad. I still get a valentine from them each year.

Valentine's Day is something to be celebrated, not dismissed. People, stop whining about your misfortunes and start thinking about those who already love you and whom you choose to love and put your efforts into THOSE relationships. If we would spend our lives being grateful for what we have, instead of looking for what we have NOT, we would lead happier and more productive lives.

CVS: The Moral Police

CVS is becoming quite the scold lately. First they proclaimed they were going to start demanding ID from people for acetone (which isn't in accordance with state or federal laws). Due to the brouhaha, they dropped THAT policy but now they've decided to stop selling cigarettes.

Don't get me wrong: I abhor cigarettes/tobacco in any form except in pesticide. But when a corporation is so concerned with social engineering that they make it a company policy, I usually choose to do business elsewhere. However, I have mixed feelings about the tobacco sales. After all, they don't sell dirtbag magazines either (Playboy, etc.) and I am always happy to see cigarettes dealt a blow.

The State of the Union

You know I miss those unscripted days of politics when the President's State of the Union speech wasn't released prior to his giving it, and the opposing party had to have a brilliant pundit on standby ready to scramble into a rebuttle.

France's First Lady

I find it fascinating that France's President had a 'domestic partner' who was known as France's First Lady. For all my wildly liberal friends who don't believe in the institution of marriage ("Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?" -Groucho Marx) I know that you will start sputtering that marriage is just a piece of paper, yada yada yada.

However: Since the French President cheated on her with a movie star, and marriage doesn't define a First Lady in France, does that make the movie star the new First Lady? Or does she actually have to move in with him before she becomes one? And what if he decides to take in a new "First Lady" every month? Inquiring minds want to know.

Overheard at the Grocery Store

BREAD VENDOR (to little old lady): Well you see, ma'am, the loaves are smaller now cuz we did some research and found out that most people never finished their larger loaves of bread and were always complaining.

LITTLE OLD LADY (slightly bewildered): Ohhh. I see...

so in a year, it will be:

BREAD VENDOR: Well you see, ma'am, research showed that everyone wanted more fiber in their diet so it was just logical for us to pair up with the sawmills and add sawdust to the batter.

LITTLE OLD LADY: Well I guess I won't need Metamucil any longer...

Yes: The food companies are working hard to convince us all that the smaller packaging is somehow due to popular demand. The reality is that prices are going up, and portions are going down.

Climate Change

I was standing in line the other day. Behind me stood a man who had suddenly decided that everyone within hearing distance should be privy to the conversation and have the advantage of his immense store of knowledge. He was probably in his 50s but it was hard to tell: His skin reflected a lifestyle of hard living and he had a very superior look pasted on his face as he treated us all to the hysterical "disproof" of climate change.

"Yup," he said loudly, eyes darting about to make sure we were all treated to this. "The ice is act-chawly GROWING at the north and south poles. We're gettin' COLDER. HAR! Guess THET disproves global warming once an' fer all."

Which is precisely why scientists have changed the term to "climate change" - there will always be morons who think that global warming means everything gets warm simultaneously.

Yes: There have been some "proofs" of climate change that were doctored in the past but overall most scientists believe that climate change is occurring, though no one can prove whether or not it's man-made or merely cyclical.

Nature's Food Patch

One day I decided to make a run to Nature's Food Patch for a couple things I needed. At Nature's Food Patch, an employee in the deli had engaged a customer and her small son in an odd conversation.

I listened as the employee breathlessly told the woman that Christians believed that dinosaurs came before God.  She added a lot of other such "information", attempting to portray us as lunkheaded idiots. Yeah sure, lady. We also think the world is flat and still believe in the Spontaneous Generation Theory, too. (Not that she would know anything about Spontaneous Generation of course. The average person has never heard about that antiquated theory).

The employee kept spouting off her "facts" in front of other employees, even engaging them to verify what she was saying, and I patiently waited for her to come wait on ME. When I got my order, I went up to the customer privately and told her to do her own research, and added that there are a variety of Christians that believe a variety of things, but I had certainly NEVER heard the dinosaur-before-God theory.

I understand from a private source that Nature's Food Patch is owned by Scientologists. No surprise there, I guess, since they're obsessively focused on health because their religious practices hinge on it.

High School Reunion

At a recent high school reunion, I made eye-contact with an attractive woman as I was winding my way through the crowd. At these events it is mandatory to say something once eye contact is made. She looked expectant.

ME: "Um, hi! You look familiar. I'm sorry I don't recognize your name. I was from a different graduating class and I'm here with Sue." (Who, incidentally, knows EVERYbody and should work for the Census Department).

WOMAN: (vaguely) "Oh?" (forces smile)

WOMAN'S HUSBAND: "It only makes sense you didn't recognize her. She was always busy sitting in the corner playing kissy-face with all the guys."

There are times that working as a spin doctor for several politicians has paid off. I was able to say something diplomatic while backing away. Looking back on it, it would probably have been more entertaining if I started attempting to point them all out.

The Real Vapid TV Show

Just discovered TV show "The Real," which apparently consists of vapid women with dark roots & artificial nails talking about the earth-shattering issues of weaves & whether or not you should wear jewelry given to you by an ex. File this under "More Reasons I Don't Want Cable TV."

Life Insurance

I went to an engagement party recently and the "victim" had no idea what was coming her way. The groom had set it all up by throwing a birthday party for himself and asking us all to bring a wrapped present ("It doesn't matter if it comes from the Dollar Store: Just wrap it so I don't have only one gift to unwrap, OK guys?").

So the end of the night came, we had been driven into their living room by the rain, and he started opening his presents. One had an "I'm a Princess" badge, which he proudly stuck on his tee-shirt as he started to open THE gift. Like Russian nesting dolls, he went through at least 6 brightly colored boxes til he got to the final box on the inside: A tiny jewelry box. He opened it.

"Well look at THIS, honey," he exclaimed. She stood to get a better look and he immediately dropped to his knee and proposed. She bawled, we laughed, and it was hysterical.

On my way out, I hugged her and told her how happy I was for her. Wiping away a tear, she smiled and said "Well, THIS will keep him alive for one more year."

The Hero

Down the aisle from me in the store stood a skinny man, weather-beaten and tatooed. His little girl stood beside him. She couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old. They were picking out candy. He had some device that was loudly playing an annoying country music song that sounded only a little worse than fingernails on a blackboard. I must admit, I saw him as a great annoyance because anyone w...ho knows me knows how much I hate most country music.

But when it came time to ring everything up, the only aisle that was open was the one with the father and daughter, who stood directly in front of me.

He asked the cashier "Do you have any bandaids?"

She said they did but she didn't know where, so I pointed to the aisle they were in.

"No," he explained. "I just need one. Her bandaid is coming off her toe," and he indicated his little girl's foot.

I looked down to see a BEAUTIFUL manicure and for the first time I looked at the little girl carefully. She had on a pretty little cotton dress, her hair was brushed lovingly, and it was neatly pulled back and tied. Her toenails were painted cherry red, with a white heart in the center of each big toe.

"WOW," I said to her. "Who did your nails? They're BEAUTIFUL."

She smiled up shyly and said "My mommy."

"Well anyone can see you have a good mommy," I said. "She takes good care of you."

Her father smiled proudly. "I've just come back from two tours in Iraq," he started to say, and that was all he had a chance to say. I was floored. I said immediately and loudly "You served in Iraq? WOW! May I shake your hand?" Startled but proud, he slowly stuck out his hand. I shook it, and Austin (who was standing behind me) also shook his hand, thanking him for his service. The others in line behind us then chimed in, thanking him profusely.

"I've only been back a short time," he said. "It hasn't been easy. Most people don't say anything like this at all."

"That's a shame," I said, sadly. Then I turned to his little girl and said "Honey, your daddy is a real hero."

As they walked out the door and the cashier rang me up, I heard his little girl say to him "Daddy! That lady said you were a hero!"

...and that's when I teared up.

Legal Welfare "Fraud"

So I'm standing in line at The Dollar Tree. In front of me is a group of 4 overfed adults wearing gaudy jewelry and one adorable thin little girl. The women were all wearing thick makeup, flip flops, and shirts that were at least a size too small for them (but obviously they thought this was sexy). The one male was dressed in designer thug clothing, had the mandatory baseball cap set jauntily to the side, wore the usual large chains and pendants studded with crystals, and his facial hair was trimmed in such an extravagant design as to mark him as "thugalicious".

They were buying 10 large boxes of candy. The cashier was very sweet to them, taking special interest in the girl and chatting with her about the movie they were about to go see as she rang them up. When she hit total, the thug produced his welfare credit card (formerly known as food stamps) and paid for the candy with it. That's when the cashier realized she'd forgotten the little girl's lollipops, so she rang them through, totalled them ($1.07) and that's when one of the porcine women loudly stated "Oh UH uh. I ain't payin fer that fer her out of my OWN money. You jest take it right off."

The cashier, pleasant as ever, said it was no problem and tried to cancel the sale. It wouldn't cancel. So she called over her supervisor who looked over the transaction and apologized but said it had already gone through on their card and there was nothing she could do. Ms. Porcine then said, exasperated, "FINE. Then GIVE me them lollipops" and snatched them from the cashier. Mr. Thugalicious made a dramatic sigh, shook his head, and loudly declared in a paternally disappointed tone "POOR customer service."

At that point I'd had enough.

"REALLY?" I said in my best bored-teenager "are you KIDDING me?" voice, glaring at him.

He opened his mouth to say something, thought better of it as he glanced down the long line of people who paid taxes so he could waste his child's food money on candy, and thought better of it. Instead, he did an about-face, and walked out the door.

MY. BLOOD. IS. BOILING.

Deifying the Dead

WHY are we so intent on making icons out of scum?

There's a biographical film coming out soon on Anna Nicole Smith and it supposedly glorifies her as a tragic heroine. She was just a drug-addled, opportunistic, manipulative nincompoop. But once someone dies we forget they were scuzzballs and everyone is intent on talking them up (see JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Michael Jackson, etc.) Yeah yeah, the others were talented but they were still scuzzballs. But due to the superstitious belief that we can't speak ill of the dead, they suddenly become cleaner than Mother Theresa... or we excuse away their bad behaviors.

Pork Rinds

...so I'm on a high protein, low carb diet and decide to grab some pork rinds... except I accidentally grabbed the "spicy hot" ones... and I'm driving down the road, windows open, munch down on one of the rinds, which shatters in an explosion of hot spices that are blown back into my right eye. So next I'm driving, my right eye closed in agony, trying to find a place to safely pull off... Well: I don't have to tell YOU about it. It happens to you all the time, right? Right?

Wiretapping

Everyone is up in arms about the Verizon wiretapping. This has been going on for a LONG time. In January 2007 the government stated that it believed it was entitled to warrantless email searches and that was under Bush ...as was the Patriot Act ...as was the National Security Letter where anyone (or anything) could be subpoenaed by the government and could not tell anyone else about it. This wasn't reported widely but it finally was struck down as anti-Constitutional in March of this year!

It's time for us to wake up before it's too late!

My Opinion On the Tri-fecta Scandals

I think we must be careful to always be truthful. We may THINK the worst (and we could be right) but it is always imperative to state the truth only. If we don't, we discredit ourselves and others. That being said:

THE IRS SCANDAL: Was Obama directly responsible? Probably not. However, his administration has reached out through the malleable press to create the ...general impression that many conservatives (such as Tea Partiers) are equivalent to the neo Nazis. I do believe it's this atmosphere of hate that created a problem that the sycophantic IRS was all too willing to feed into.

THE PRESS SCANDAL: As of yesterday, the AP Scandal broadened when Attorney General Holder admitted that they've done this countless other times with other reporters and news organizations. I can't say for certain if Obama was directly responsible but again, he most certainly is responsible for the jackbooted attempts to subdue anyone who disagrees with his organization.

THE BENGHAZI SCANDAL: Yes, we need to know who changed the talking points and who chose to point the finger at a little-known (and awful) video mocking Mohammed. However, we have quickly forgotten that, when Obama heard what was happening to his appointed ambassador, he returned to bed so he could get his much-cherished sleep.

Does a Bear...?

Speaking with a friend online about ridiculous sayings, I recalled one of my favorite examples: I once had a creepy boss who was an emaciated chain-smoking blond with dagger like fingernails she never cleaned. She would toss back her shaggy, over-processed hair and regularly make a rhetorical statement (whenever you dared to ask her a question): "Does a bear sh*t in the woods?"

That was a question I could never truly answer because it could take a philosophical bent similar to "If a tree falls in the woods but no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" I came to believe that this usually was an elaborate way of saying "yes" but I was often tempted to waste her time debating this just to get even. ("Well, Kathy, I'm glad you brought this up. I've seen the Charmin commercials and...")

Creepy Pastor

WELL: I just got a LinkedIn request from a pastor in Canada.

A pastor: What could be wrong? I accepted it and THEN did my research. He was arrested last fall for solicitation of a prostitute in New Hampshire.

That's when it all clicked into place.

I had been briefly in contact w/ him through email last fall concerning his forming a new church there, and hadn't heard from him since. Apparently he'd been arrested shortly after that and relocated to Canada, where he isn't well known. Imagine how quickly I figured out how to UNlink...

Conspiracy Theory Month

This seems to be Conspiracy Theory Month. In the last couple of days I've seen conspiracy theories propounded that I've questioned, and when the Conspiracy Theorist can't show any valid evidence, I eventually get "believe what you want" as their final rebuttle. I hate that phrase: As if I WANT to believe in fairies and unicorns. What I WANT is the truth.

Real Men

Thank heavens for real men like my dad, who although he is famous he is just "Dad" to me and is there for him when I need him. I am so blessed: I think of this especially because a dear friend just lost her father and I know a good father is to be treasured. Today he helped to "guy stuff" around my house. At age 76, he is a powerhouse.

Lucy Stoner

I'm a member of The Lucy Stone League (Lucy Stone was the woman who kept her name when she was married in the early 1900s). Most of the women are genuine, thoughtful, and sane, but then you get the occasional weirdo like this one:

"I threw out the whole tradition and went to the JP court. Gave my mom 24 hrs notice to be there, surprised my kids by having someone else bring them to the ceremony, surprised 2 of his by not getting a message to them until afterwards. Told him I wasn't changing my name when the clerk was issuing us the license. Oh, and I asked him and 4 days later we were married. Surprisingly, the clerk that married us skipped the obey part without having to be told. I guess she could just tell..."

HOW ROMANTIC. I hesitate to ask her why she bothered to get married in the first place - it sounds more like a harried business transaction.

Red Tide

So my husband and I went to the Venice Beach area with two others to look for sharks' teeth fossils on the beach. No one told us they had Red Tide.

It was very windy, gray, the waves were frothy and choppy - it looked just like Maine looks in the dead of winter during a storm. Thankfully it wasn't as cold.

We passed the sign that said "Red Tide: Proceed at Your Own Risk." We figured it couldn't be all that bad. I've had mild reactions to Red Tide before, and the other three have almost no allergies at all that I'm aware of.

After using my inhaler four times, my eyes began to sting. As I stumbled back to the car, they grew worse. By the time I made it to the car, my eyes were on fire, tears streaming down my cheeks. It was a deserted area, so I realized I was on my own. I ended up driving to the nearest Circle K, squinting through my burning eyes, grabbed Benadryl and eye drops, and popped 2 Benadryls while the girl rang me up.

When I got back, our guests stumbled up to the car and they looked like the survivors of a chemical attack! My husband soon joined them and everyone popped Benadryl as we kept passing the eye drops among ourselves.

The only way we could've left that area faster is if we were in The General Lee.

Racist Slur

I see an ad on Craigslist for a clothes washer. We go to this house where a pot bellied redneck comes strolling out to meet us. The washer is an old avocado green one that's been painted over in an attempt to make it look newer, and it's not worth the $75 he's asking. I point out the chipped paint and offer $50.

"Hey naw," the redneck drawls. "Ah KNOW what it's wuth. Yah cain't jew me down lak th...at."

WHAT??? Did that piece of ignorance just come out of his mouth? I can't hold back, so I lie (I know, lying is wrong - don't do this at home, kiddies).

"I find that very offensive," I say coldly, "since I am Jewish."

His eyes shift. "Er, uh, wahl it's awl good," he replies.

"No," I snap, "It ISN'T." And I turn on my heel and leave.

Moron.

No Need For Concern

While Austin was putting up Christmas lights, 3 police cruisers went by and a helicopter searched the neighborhood. Austin finally flagged down a cop who told him that "it wasn't something for the public to be concerned about."

Ten minutes later we heard siren wails as police cars raced down the road. Austin poked his head in the door and announced "The cops are now chasing whoever we aren't to be concerned about."

1/6 of the World Gone, Not With a Bang but With a Whimper

I just looked up abortion stats in Wikipedia and realized that a full 1/6 of the world's population has been aborted since 1973. O_o

5 Ways to Keep a Man's Attention

I just saw an article titled "5 Ways to Keep a Man's Attention: How to Keep Your Man Around for Good." I would expect to see that title from a woman's magazine in the 40s, but... really??? How about substituting "Spouse" for "Man" and making the article for everyone?

Besides: Everyone knows the top 5 ways to get a man's attention:

1. A shrill scream in the night.
2. Waiting till he drinks the milk out of the carton before you say "Ohmigosh! You didn't drink that, did you? I just heard on the news that they just found someone's finger in one of those cartons!"
3. Dog poop in front of the bathroom door.
4. Wearing a hat with long ostrich plumes to the beach.
5. Standing in a major parking lot singing "I'm a little teapot" while wielding knitting needles.

Kerfuffle

Your Word of the Day is "kerfuffle." Since this word sums up the current Presidential race, I assume you will use it liberally today. You're welcome.

Cuckoo

My parents got me a cuckoo clock when they went to Germany's Black Forest recently. It's awesome... except when I find myself saying something really stupid out loud and it's suddenly followed by a click, whir... and a "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!"

At those times, I'm awfully glad I'm not on a reality show.

Palmetto Bug

HOLY COW!!! The Palmetto Bugs (a.k.a roaches) down here in Florida are so huge they have landing gear! I have one that got in my house and. is. stalking. me. It is at least 3 inches long. I am about to have a heart attack. O_o

Mistaken Identity

So my friend, Terri, and I go to this bookstore. We pick out some cookbooks and a couple other books and go to check them out. The nice old lady strikes up a conversation with us and says how great those cookbooks look.

"Yeah," says Terri, "I LOVE to cookl"

"That's true," I chime in, "She's FANTASTIC."

"I'm really domestic," Terry adds. "I can't stop cleaning either."...

"That's true," I say. "She's a powerhouse."

"Well," replies the old dear to me, "That hardly seems fair. She does the majority of the work! You're one lucky lady!"

OK, I know I wear my hair short, but ...

Magazine Idea

Men have "manly topic" magazines full of half-dressed hotties. I think it's time for women to have cooking or craft magazines with half-dressed men holding up casseroles and knitted baby blankets! Michael's Craft Store should sponsor my idea.

Confession is Good for the Soul

For those of you who know about the crazy mother-in-law (known for being a compulsive liar):

Yesterday she told my husband that she hired a private eye to follow me around and he found out things about me that would shock him!

Yup: It's time to come clean about my sickness. I WEAR WOMEN'S CLOTHES!!! There. I said it.

I Can Beat Any Mother-in-Law Tale

OK, yes. I admit it: My mother-in-law is right. How did she EVER guess that my whole wedding was an elaborate set-up to pacify my "husband" but we're not really married? I am in awe of her sheer genius and uncanny ability to see right through me. It gives me the chills.

I had to hire a lot of actors, but it was worth it. Bwahahaha! Of course it got rather expensive, and I still owe my friend Rene big bucks for playing the part of "Maid of Honor". That kind of talent doesn't come cheaply!

But my mother-in-law hasn't figured THIS out yet: I'm really a space alien with plans to dominate the earth. Viva la Revolution! BOW before ME, people of the earth! I will grind you all beneath the heel of my Antonio Melani boot.

(You're my paid friends and/or pretend family members. I'm counting on you to keep this a secret]

Some Recipes Are Like SciFi

I saw a great quote the other day: "Reading recipes is like reading science fiction. I get to the end and say, 'Well, that's not going to happen.'"

I learned the pinch/dab method from my mother. Both Mom and her mom were great gourmet cooks and I am a wonderful cook to a point. But there are some recipes that simply don't interest me. You know the kind I mean: They have 10 ingredients or more, and at least one of the ingredients is something that you have to travel to the next city to find. I will not take that challenge. If I want something that fancy, I'll find a 5-star chef.

Frack That

When I was writing a series of green practices and procedures manuals for an educational group, I ran across the enheartening statistic that there are 100 years' worth of natural gas beneath the USA! Of course that could mean a lessened dependence on oil.

Perhaps some of you have heard of that natural gas claim? Sadly, it turns out to be incorrect.

Happy Fathers Day

HAPPY FATHERS DAY to every man who was strong enough to refrain from killing his children when he heard "Are we there yet?" for the 273rd time.

We live because they restrained themselves.

Bad Fido

I'm in the process of civilizing my parents' new puppy. The problem is that he lusts after my shoes. Austin finds it hysterical to watch me chasing Fido holding a (recently chewed) shoe in one hand, with Fido skidding all over my wood floors, until I finally corral him and bop him with it while shouting "Bad Fido! No shoes!"

My household has quickly degenerated into a Monty Python skit.

Avoid the Belcher Animal Clinic

I call Largo Feed (they have a vet that comes once a month) and it's $120 to vaccinate all three dogs.

So I call my regular vet's (the Belcher Animal Clinic in Clearwater, FL) and ask them how much they'd charge for the three dogs to get their yearly exam and shots. I very specifically mention that the Largo Feed vet is charging only $120. The receptionist leaves to consult someone, then comes back on the phone and tells me they'll do it for $140.  So, I figure what the heck? I'll go to the Belcher Animal Clinic for the convenience of it: What's $20 more?

WRONG.

They charged me $140 each.

When I tried arguing with the office manager, she very coolly told me that I must have misunderstood what had been said to me. I didn't misunderstand, and I was fool enough to pay for their mistake. I should have refused to pay.

An Unconventional "Raise"

My friend calls to tell me about the company restaurant which was just renovated. In addition to pouring money into a losing enterprise, "They've hired two chefs from The Hardrock Cafe," she tells me cheerily. The potato salad's great! Which is a good thing, cuz that's my raise, baby!"

Be Careful on the Water in This Weather

For my fellow Floridians: Be careful being on the water in this weather. We were at EG Simmons park yesterday evening when the coroner's unit arrived to inspect the body that washed ashore, and they said it was someone out kayaking the afternoon before. The water was choppy, the kayak was capsized, and hypothermia sets in quickly... They hadn't made a decisive identification, so the news hasn't hit the papers yet.

Romance

HE: [romantically] What are you thinking?
ME: Oh... Did I clip my toenails too short? What's that in the garbage? And why does my finger smell funny?

This is the reason I was never made to be a romance novelist.

Suggestive Facebook Profile Photos

Here's what I want to say so badly to the women who post suggestive pictures of themselves on Facebook:  "Yes. We know you're proud of your body. Women who are strippers are remarkably athletic - most of us could never hope to imitate a pretzel. You're so thin, a sandwich is all that stands between you and death's door. Are those lace panties in your picture part of your work uniform?"

I am repeatedly surprised by women who value themselves by their looks only. Then again, perhaps that's all they have to offer.

Fighting City Hall

It's garage sale day, and the darned code inspectors keep stealing my signs (I guess I must PAY the city of Largo for the privilege of having a sign out). I finally put one out and smeared it with honey. It went too, but it went stickily...

The Dumbing Down of America, Exhibit A

EXHIBIT A for the state of the American Education System:

My friend posts a spoof about the danger of
velociraptors, I agree (and add an anecdotal tale). Now another woman is anxiously asking where we got this "information", how come she hasn't heard about it, and she is VERY concerned.

I am NOT going to show her any mercy by explaining it's a spoof. It's HER fault if she fell asleep in Science from grades 1-12.

The Quaker Steak n' Lube Car Show

My weekend started last night at the Quaker Steak n' Lube Car Show. There's nothing better than sitting around with a table full of Vietnam Vets and younger men, all into nothing but cars, guns, and women. The testosterone levels were outta sight!

My Alcoholic Neighbor

So my freaky alcoholic neighbor comes wandering by while my boyfriend is tinkering with my truck. He walks up to us and starts whining about how he just saw his wife with another man and somehow segues into talking about how married sex is better because you don't have to use condoms. "You know what I mean, my friend," he tells my boyfriend with a leer and a wink.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Check Out My Butt

I am wearing a really nice pair of slacks today - they flow and swirl about elegantly. I was quite pleased with them... until someone pointed out that the circular patters all over them converge into a bullseye on my butt.

Note to self: Always look at your backside in the mirror before you leave the house. Or the department store.

Nothing like the smell of a clean guy.

"I missed you," he said. "I grew desperate, and found myself re-reading

"Texts?" she said, utterly mystified. She couldn't remember sending him
any texts. "What did they say?"

"Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Easter..." he replied.

Census Phone Call Follow-Up

I got a call yesterday from the Census bureau. They wanted to follow up and ask additional questions. When they told me I HAD to take their call and it was part of the census, I grew infuriated.

As I pointed out, I'd read nothing about that and it certainly hadn't been mentioned on the census. I'm betting it's not illegal to refuse to answer any additional questions when you've already completely and accurately filled out the questionnaire and sent it in.

Besides, what a great con job it would be if someone called supposedly from the Census Bureau, and asked additional questions (such as your social security number, bank account number, etc.) I wonder how many people would fall for that?

I get a little antsy - I like my privacy. What can I say?

In the end, I chose not to stand on principle and I answered their questions.

What a sell-out!

The Lucrative Rewards for Curing No One

A friend of mine almost died of a drug overdose this weekend.

As I have a "no drug" policy, I have a very hard time feeling any sympathy for someone who makes the self-indulgent choices that I choose not to make. However, because I was the only one this addict could turn to at the time, I was the one who went to the hospital. Twice. Once to take him there for the O.D., and once to take him back during his detox as he was puking up blood.

Yeah, drugs are fun.

I called his best guy friend "Dan", who is a recovered alcoholic. During the weekend drama, Dan texted me saying "Oxys are what's killing everybody, just had an old friend die. He needs to go to rehab."

To which I replied "He's been thru rehab 3-4 times in the last year and a half. He could TEACH it. He needs to simply make up his mind."

Dan wrote "Well then, we will just watch him die, if he doesn't get help somewhere because what u c now is him making up his mind."

And what I said is completely true, given the quality of our rehab clinics. You see, rehab clinics get a ton of government money to conduct classes and therapy sessions for people who have been convicted of illegal drug use, or who qualify for a government program through other avenues.

These clinics can also anesthetize an addict who is going through withdrawal symptoms, so the addict is basically sedated as they come down. This only makes it easier for the addict to get on the stuff again, as there is no real punishment for it: The addict doesn't associate any real pain with the process, and in his opinion, the pain he causes others isn't important.

It also means the clinics get repeat customers, which is very important. After all, short of becoming dealers themselves, they need a constant influx of customers to justify the public funds they're dipping into.

There is one lone voice, crying in the wilderness, and his name is Dr. Stanton Peele. But Dr. Peele's clinic is too successful, in that it teaches self-control and stops the psychobabble which enables the addict. So, Dr. Peele's clients have a vastly lower recidivism rate than standard drug rehab facilities. That makes Dr. Peele a great threat to these clinics, and obviously they all keep hoping he'll just shut up and go away.

So our clinics in the Tampa Bay Area are worthless (and I assume most of them are). As long as they keep coddling our addicts and telling them that their choices are not their fault, they will never get better.

Which is exactly why there are no effective drug treatment centers here.

Dancing With the Harlots

I've written about sleezy kids' dance recitals before. It incensed me then, and still does. Interestingly, the parents at the studio that I wrote about must have thrown a complete fit, because I was dragged unwillingly to this year's dance recital and it was actually in good taste!

But this tendency toward making kids into adorable hooker look-a-likes continues.

The mothers are often the first to defend this poor choice because (obviously) it makes them look very, very bad. Also, they may be re-living their childhoods through their children - we've all seen the desperate mom who obsessively thrusts her kids into anything that she wanted to do when she was young.

But... what's the school's excuse?

One thing's for sure - a child molester can get a floor show cheap these days.

The Thrift Shop Find

Every other weekend is filled with teenagers now. Which is wonderful. I don't understand people who don't want children around... or, in this case, young adults. Whatever. A full home is a happy home.

So this weekend we loaded up and hit garage sales, thrift stores, and the beach. New clothes (and other assorted sundries) were acquired and, best of all, we discovered this carved wooden statue:

Perhaps I should've bought it. It could come in "hand"y.

The Russian (and other countries') Adoption Problem

The woman who sent her adoptive son back to Russia with a note stating that he was a sociopath is hardly a woman who snapped after singing "I'm a little teapot" one too many times.

She has done what so many parents who have adopted from Russia have been tempted to do. (To read more about this, go here and here).

The sad truth, and one that has been known for years, is that most children from Russia (or many other third world countries) come with problems. It's easy to see why. Here's the recipe:

1. Go to a third world country (and parts of Russia are just that)
2. Take one child being generally unwanted
3. Institutionalize that child for a long time
4. Couple that with him moving to another country and being forced to assimilate the culture

And voila! One freshly made (you choose):

A. Sociopath
B. Child with severe attachment disorder
C. Hell on wheels
D. All of the above

I've read of these cases for years, and I'm shocked that it's taken this long for anyone to take real notice of them.

What's amazing is that it took this one incident to put the spotlight on an issue that's been going on for a very long time. And truthfully, there's no solution. If you want a child desperately enough, you may want there to be a solution, but wishful thinking can't change facts.

Studies repeatedly show a child's personality is developed between 3 and 5 years of age. And these formative years are usually filled with trauma in the case of an unwanted child.

Now other sympathetic families are weighing in, telling of their miserable Russian adoptions. Some have rationalized, some have muddled through it all, but most speak of the toll it takes and the burdens they must carry due to the children they took on.

We are exporting other countries' problems when we take on their children, with rare exceptions.

Years ago I had acquaintances who chose to adopt from India because they felt specially attuned to that country (due to the whimsical fact that the husband played the Sitar). They went through a long and painful process, sending money to India, getting pictures, etc.

The baby was a girl. She had been raised since birth in an orphanage run by nuns, but the problem was that the orphanage had very little funding. Therefore, the children often didn't receive proper nutrition.

When this couple received the baby, she was about 8 months old, had been held rarely (so her head was somewhat deformed from being left in the crib so much), and she was severely thin and undernourished (she was the size of a newborn). As a result, their pediatrician warned them that there was likely to be brain damage or at least mental development issues.

The parents joyfully announced all this to us because, frankly, it was new. And any experience, when new, is something you think you can happily overcome, slogging through mountains and singing the theme from The Sound of Music. It was A Challenge, A Rite of Passage, A Chance To Show Off Parenting Skills.

But that child is now about 18 and I wonder how she fared. And if she lived. And whether or not the marriage survived. And when the bloom fell off the rose, did the Sitar playing husband leave or did he merely sink into despair? For usually it's the wife who takes on the true burden of raising a special needs child.

It is often very hard to bond with a child that is not your biological child, for the simple reason that hormones play a factor when a baby is born. Without your hormones singing that child's praises, it's much tougher to get past the bumps in the road, let alone the crevasses.

Thus, an adoptive child does not have the advantages that a biological child has. Over the years, I have had close friends who were adopted, and not one of them ever felt that bond. And, may I venture to add that it's because their parents apparently never felt that bond, either.

I am sure that there are exceptions: For instance, if a parent adopts a child right after the loss of a child, they may be able to transfer the bond. And there are parents who may truly believe that they are as close to that bond as they can be. One adoption site says that research shows that adoptive families bond as closely as biological ones. I'm not disputing that bonding occurs, but I question to what degree it occurs.

Adoption and assimilation of children is tough enough as it is, without adding other problems to the mix. Although we certainly don't have enough children to adopt within the USA (due to abortion and restrictive laws), going outside of the country isn't a better solution.

"Immediate Family Only" Policy is About to End

It's about time. Sometimes Obama gets it right, even if he has the wrong motives.

Barack Obama is ordering that nearly all hospitals allow patients to say who has visitation rights and who can help make medical decisions. But his reason is that he wants to pander to gays and give them equal rights when it comes to their partners.

This is a payoff for an earlier campaign promise Obama made in exchange for the gay vote. Not such an amazing reason, when there are so MANY varieties of reasons for this move. And not only gays will profit.

Couples who were living together have wanted this right for years. And in my case, the majority of my family no longer lives near me. In fact, my siblings all live overseas. So close friends and significant others have taken the place of family many years ago. And this is common in an America where people are constantly on the move. *I* am the mutant, having stayed in Florida for as long as I have.

Sadly, this change of policy is something that only a Democrat would have instituted, which shows how stagnant the Republican party has become.

Crist Makes Another Bad Decision

Despite my earlier belief that Crist couldn't possibly make another boneheaded move, he just vetoed a bill that would make teachers ... *gasp* ... work for their pay and demand job performance based raises.

Wow, that was close! Let's not get carried away! Good thing the unions got in the way, or we might have something in Florida resembling real education.

Fox News vs. Republicans

An interesting article in Newsweek today argues that the Republican establishment is rejecting Fox News.

This only makes sense, as the Republicans are part of the same good ole boy network that the Democrats are part of. I can't imagine rank-and-file politicians favoring any network that can stir up the masses.

I'm not a fan of Fox News (I never watch it). I've always found CNN to be relatively impartial until Lou Dobson left. Now I just glean my news from internet news sources. But I find this new twist on network news to be fascinating!

Oprah

It's about time someone tries to take Oprah Winfrey down a notch. For an accurate discussion of what Oprah believes, go to this article by a non-denominational Christian think tank. It's a pretty good assessment of what I've observed over the years.

Now Kitty Kelley, famous gossip hound and biographer, has taken on The Great O, and has found that many media outlets won't discuss the book with her, for fear of alienating Oprah.

Why?

Because Oprah has a large number of mindless, brain-dead fans who drool over every word she emits and follow her blindly. To anger Oprah is to anger her fans.

Kitty Kelley has done many biographies and angered many people. I've often heard the controversies, the arguments, and the denials. So, is she telling the truth?

The people who praised her biography of Ronald Reagan and were aghast when we questioned her facts cannot decry her now.

On the other hand, those of us who felt that she was full of crap to begin with may finally find some allies.

I won't buy the book, but you can bet that I'll rent it from our local library.

Dear Roger

Some of you may remember Roger, from When a Guy Can't Take a Hint. Well, he still hasn't taken the hint. Although he laid low for a while, he started annoying Cindy again. So, I helpfully composed a "Dear John" letter for her:

Dear Roger,

You are a putz.

For a guy who looks like he belongs in the geriatric version of The Village People, you really aren't all that virile, either. I wish I could say that you are a man that could fulfill my dreams, but you fulfill my nightmares.

If your personality were of any note, I would enjoy keeping you as a friend. But when a personality is as sour as old jockey shorts, there is little to recommend it.

Your sparkling wit and repartee... oh wait, you don't have that.

If I were to put together a list of all your virtues, you might make it into a fortune cookie slip.

Much love,
Cindy

If she has the guts to send this, I think it will solve the problem.

The Civil War from a Religious Perspective

The Christian "Roll Over" Argument

Obviously since people have devoted entire books to the topic of the American Civil War, I cannot possibly do it justice in a short amount of time. (For those of you who are interested in delving into it, I highly recommend William Safire's book "Freedom").

However, there is a renewed interest in the Civil War at this time, due to the current Federal government's continual references to The Commerce Clause in the Constitution. There are rumors that states may, once again, try to secede.

I have heard some Christians cite scripture from the Bible, who say that it is our obligation to bow to the government, with little exception. (The exception would be if the government demanded we do something which is against what the Bible teaches).

But How Do You Define Government?

There were 13-16 states that defined the confederacy in 1861, out of a total of 33 states at that time. So it was a significant number of states (almost half) that decided to exert what they considered to be their state rights.

As Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Kentucky Resolution:

"Resolved, that the several States composing the United States of America, are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their general government; but that by compact under the style and title of a Constitution for the United States and of amendments thereto, they constituted a general government for special purposes, delegated to that government certain definite powers, reserving each State to itself, the residuary mass of right to their own self-government; and that whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force: That to this compact each State acceded as a State, and is an integral party, its co-States forming, as to itself, the other party....each party has an equal right to judge for itself, as well of infractions as of the mode and measure of redress."

Yeah, he was the master of the run-on sentence.

What It Boils Down To

But what it boils down to is that Jefferson (the third President of the USA) felt that the States called the shots and created the Federal government, thus the Federal government wasn't supposed to reign over the states, but was supposed to be ancillary to them.

Jefferson also wrote the famous "Separation Letter" which set the precedence for the separation of church and state, and contributed to a great deal of thought as to how government should work in the early stages of our republic, so let's not quickly dismiss him as a crackpot.

So, What Does it Mean?

So, is it truly rebellion if the states try to secede again? And if so, is it contrary to what a Christian should do? And, perhaps more importantly (as Christians are a minority), is it something that should be considered by a citizen of the USA?

Rebellion, like history, is in the eye of the beholder. It can certainly be slanted to justify whatever we might want. However, this is a topic which we need to begin to consider, as the Federal government continues to extend its powers via the excuse of the Commerce Clause.

Neal McDonough

Neal McDonough is a name I hadn't heard before, as I watch so little TV. I recognize him from his pictures, but I have no idea what I've seen him do.

But Neal McDonough is apparently the man with the big cahonas in Hollywood, and he chooses not to share them with everyone. Because of that, he was recently fired from a new TV series, as he wouldn't do a sex scene with sleazy co-star Virginia Madsen (who apparently has no qualms about it and couldn't be bothered to stick up for the guy).

Wow, an actor with morals! I don't think we've seen such a thing since Pat Boone.

One writer snarkily commented that morals didn't stop McDonough from playing a serial killer once, but let's face it: Playing a serial killer hardly compares to getting naked in front of a crew of people and being very intimate with a naked skank when you're a married man with children.

At a time when we keep hearing how skeevy Hollywood men can be (thanks to Tiger and Jesse), McDonough brings a breath of fresh air.

Bravo, Neal McDonough, Bravo!

April Fools' Day

In the grand tradition of April Fools' Day, Google has announced that they're changing their name to "Topeka". As Google is my homepage, I was met with this announcement immediately and, half awake, I read their explanation with growing bewilderment until it dawned on me that today is April Fools' Day.

You would think I would remember April Fools' Day. My grandmother was the patron saint of April Fools' Day. Forget about St. Patrick - no one can lay claim to a holiday like my grandmother could.

I don't know how the woman was able to find so much fake food in an era when there were no computers and we lived in Florida, for heavens' sake (there wasn't much shopping variety here in the 70s). But every April Fools' Day she delightedly fooled one of us into almost taking a bite from a sponge-and-rubber sandwich or a piece of angel food cake made from sponge. And that was just the opening round.

There was always a spectacular prank on April Fools' Day. We learned from an early age to be fully aware that April first was coming, but although we felt we were prepared, Grandma always was able to get at least one of us.

One year, fully knowing that it was April Fools' Day, I went running to answer the phone. "Saur!" my grandmother said excitedly, "Oh my goodness! Run outside and look real quick! There's a hot air balloon over your house and I can see it from here!"

What do you think I did? Yup, you guessed it. When I got back to the phone, Grandma was laughing hysterically.

Of course the apple didn't fall far from the tree, and I've been known to indulge in a prank or two myself.

One of my best friends, Pov, has a gorgeous collectible car that he's madly in love with. During the restoration process, he had become extremely annoying to all of us. We heard more about carburetors and paint jobs than any of us ever wanted to hear in our lives.

One day, when he was over at my house, I had run to the store to grab a couple things. When I came back I walked by him casually and simply said "Where's your car, Pov?"

He ran outside quicker than I ran when I thought there was a hot air balloon waiting for me.

Etc.

Insurance is No Longer a Career: It's a Nightmare

I pity everyone who sells insurance for a living. As if it's not bleak enough, our local news channel 8 is blaring a breaking news story about scammers who bilk the elderly by pretending to be insurance agents.

I happen to know that the ONLY market for insurance right now is the supplemental Medicare market. When the elderly get spooked, that will close the final door in the insurance industry and agents will join the ranks of the unemployed everywhere.

The New Insurance Vista

Now that this botched Obama bill has passed, insurance will drastically change. For what I believe to be a very realistic look, go to this article in Investors Business Daily. It's an eye opener.

Jesse James

What a skank.

His third mistress has just "revealed" herself (pun intended) and at least one has said she's had unprotected sex with him. All of them are hardly the-girl-next-door types, unless you live next to a strip club.

Yuck.

The Sad-but-True Cost of the New Health Care Bill

I really had hoped for something more. But, as the saying goes, a camel is a horse made by committee.

The New York Times believes it "...would raise, not lower, federal deficits, by $562 billion."

What a nightmare.

Hoodlums & Scalawags

Our local newspaper, the St. Pete Times, tells of how a School Board member labeled disruptive jerks as "hoodlums".

The disruptive jerks were black, and the next thing you know, they took offense to the term.

If only they'd spend more time in the classroom and less time being hoodlums, they would've learned what it meant.

The reporter attempts to explain away their overreaction by this convoluted reasoning: The first half of the word "hoodlum" is "hood", as in "neighborhood", and since black thugs often refer to their home territory as "the hood", they own this term and it shouldn't be used in any other words about them.

I would suggest the term "scalawag", which was a favorite label my grandfather always used for hoodlums. But wait! It's fraught with meaning also! Apparently it was "...a moniker for southern whites who supported Reconstruction following the Civil War." Well, we wouldn't want to call black hoodlums "scalawags", then, would we?

How about "reprobate"? Nah - our hoodlums would probably think it has a sexual meaning (reproduction and masturbate) and we wouldn't want to confuse them any further. They can hardly be rocket scientists, after all, if they don't value schooling.

How about "delinquent"? Certainly not! Anyone who eats in a deli would be infuriated! Hold the mustard!

How about "hooligan" or "scofflaw"? Well honestly, could you take anyone seriously who used those terms? I know *I* couldn't.

"Avast ye hooligan! I demand redress for your knavish behavior! Yea verily, I shall smite thee!"

So...

How about just plain "jackasses"? As donkeys can't talk, it's safe to say they can't object.

Wolf Attack

Wow. The wolf experts are shocked. There's been a fatal wolf attack in Alaska.

They express surprise! "Wow," they say. "This is only the second documented fatality ever recorded!"

Yeah, ya think? Know why? Because it's hard to document something when you're dead and your intestines have taken up residence in a wolf's belly!

Only survivors have the chance to talk.

There are two reasons we're now hearing of these attacks. First, we have better modes of communication.

For instance, let's say a wolf attack happened in the 1800s. If there were any survivors, they might eventually get to "civilization" where they could tell the tale of the attack but there would be no real evidence, little interest in finding any, and the story would become "rumor". And how many average people wrote then, and if they could write, how many took the time to do so when there was a living to be made? And how much of their writing would survive to become "documentation"? Very little.

Secondly, our modern lives give us better reaction time and we have more ability to do research than ever before. Not only were the wolves that killed this woman tracked and killed, but they're also going to make sure that the right wolves were killed by matching their teeth to the bite marks. This concept would have been unheard of in the 1800s.

To sum it up: Wolf attacks are quite plausible. I have always been amused by how many "experts" maintain that wolves are lovable, harmless fuzzballs. Look at their teeth, for crying out loud! It's not like they chew cud.

War? What War? Oh Yeah... THAT War!

Meanwhile, the war continues.

As Richard Brautigan once wrote:

Someplace in the World a Man is Screaming in Pain

Someplace in the world
a woman is sitting
under a beautiful green tree,
and she is shelling peas,
and she is thinking only
of beautiful things,
like waterfalls or rainbows
or peas.

We need to stop shelling peas, and refocus. Although Obama promised a quick end to the war, we continue to do battle in Afghanistan. We cannot afford to be The World's Policemen right now. In fact, we never could afford it.

Bring our troops back to the USA, but keep them on payroll. Have them patrol the borders, instead. At least if they're in the USA, they can spend their money here and perhaps contribute some to our own economy.

And, there will be less soldiers screaming in pain.

Sloth Pin

The Chinese Ebay sellers generally have no taste. And lately, I don't see many people snapping up their fakes. This one really takes the prize, though. It's billed as "Big Sloth Brooch Pin w/ Black Swarovski Crystals."

This is the kind of thing that visits me in my nightmares.

The "Honest" Company Rep

My best girl friend, Cindy, owns a small company specializing in government bids. Sometimes government bids demand a mandatory get-together before companies can formally bid on a project. There is truly no need for a mandatory meeting, except that it can often discourage companies that are outside of the area. In other words, it gives preference to the local boys.

And since Cindy has a small company, she can't attend every bid, so she sometimes has a representative go for her.

Yesterday, Cindy was trapped at the office all day, so she asked her father-in-law to go for her. She also asked him to sign in as her, not because she was trying to pull some scam (and it is allowed) but because she wanted all information to be addressed to her. And since she'd had some run-ins with this particular governmental entity, she asked him to sign in under her alternate company, which they hadn't heard of.

However, "Sid" got an attack of conscience. Shortly after the meeting ended, he called her. Apparently he started out doing what she'd asked, which was to sign in and take notes.

But suddenly after he signed in, Sid felt remorseful. So, he went up to the man holding the conference, pulled him aside, and whispered "I signed in as Cindy Smythe. But, I'm not Cindy."

This was probably apparent to John, the head honcho.

"But you know Cindy," he added. "I think you may have had some disagreements before."

Well, if John hadn't remembered her before, Sid had been kind enough to help him out.

"And..." said Sid, "She owns two companies. I signed in as ABC Co., but we really are usually known to you as XYZ Co. I think you should know that."

So at this point, I think we can safely assume that John was pretty certain he was dealing with a shady company who was sending a man afflicted with some form of mental illness, in an attempt to somehow subvert the system.

Needless to say, Cindy will no longer be sending Sid to any functions.

Condoms vs. Catholics in the Philippines

Let me start by admitting I have an uneasy relationship with the Catholic church. As a Christian who belongs in the "protestant" category, I have well-researched reasons for being there. I am too wise to fall into the "we-all-believe-the-same-thing-anyway" crowd. Frankly, we don't.

But, there is much good in what the Catholic church teaches.

For instance, I agree that in an ideal world, people abstain from sex before marriage, there is no promiscuity, and wise choices are always made.

But... we're talking the Philippines, here, people.

My brother is married to a Filipina and he currently supports some of the children in her family. I have an ex-fiance who's a conflicted "Flip" (Filipino). He's American, and his relatives accuse him of being the "whitest" Flip they know. But, he has visited his homeland, and he is only one generation removed from the islands.

Obviously our family has often crossed paths with the Filipino culture, so we have a great deal of knowledge about them.

One of the things that is striking about the Phillipines is the rampant promiscuity that exists. For example: As a result of this being an ego-centric culture, children are often thrown to the wayside. After all, kids can get in the way of a budding romance, so they are usually discarded. Yup - discarded like yesterday's fish.

It is not uncommon for a divorced or single mother to kick her young children out into the street or fend them off on relatives who abuse them or neglect them. Why? Because the new man in her life is going to want to start his own family and he doesn't want the burden of some other man's children. And, it's likely that her mother did the same thing to her.

Obviously if this is the way that many mothers feel about their children, most men are more than happy to take advantage of it. And this is just one example of the wanton lifestyle that exists not as an aberration, but as the norm.

So it is certainly no surprise to find that AIDS is soaring in their population.

The Philippine government has decided that they need to do what they can to reduce the STDs that are rampant over there, and they are especially concerned about AIDS. The cold, hard truth is that the government may not have to pay for all the street urchins, but they certainly don't need a plague on their hands. Homeless children aren't a direct concern, but AIDS could become so.

So, the government decided to put their workers on the streets to hand out condoms and roses to those who were passing by.

But, as the Associated Press reports, "It didn't get far. Within days, leaders of the powerful Roman Catholic Church began urging the faithful to reject condoms, reigniting a long-running battle over contraception in the overwhelmingly Catholic nation."

OK, yay for the Catholic leaders: They get to stand on principle. But do we really need to subject these people to such restrictions even when they're not truly practicing (or believing) Catholics?

Because, let's face it, a practicing/believing Catholic wouldn't be indulging in promiscuity anyway, nor would they disregard the care of their children. Therefore it's logical to conclude that most Flips really are Catholic in name only (at best).

Taking away a person's options to do what they want to do is not truly promoting belief. Instead, it is promoting restrictions. If the Catholic church wants to take control of the population, they should take over the government first. But if the Catholic church wants to control their hearts, it's going about it the wrong way.

Let's face it, the Bible teaches that God gave man free will. Even God doesn't want man to be forced to come blindly to him: God wants man to approach him with an open heart.

Why should the Catholic church behave any differently?

New Research on REM (Rapid Eye Movement)

Some of my readers may recall that I suffer from Nightmare Disorder. It is an exceedingly rare, unpleasant sleep disorder which results in vivid, cruel nightmares that drag on all night. I've had it for as long as I can remember.

Athough Nightmare Disorder is not depression or anxiety, a mild anti-anxiety drug (Celexa), when taken at night, has been able to reduce it somewhat. Never the less, it remains there, lurking in the back of my subconscious, desperate to rear its ugly head whenever possible.

However, new research on REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep gives me some hope. Studies show that those of us who experience extended periods of REM are more prone to depression, vivid nightmares, and a negative outlook in the morning. Well, let's face it - if you faced Freddy Krueger every night, wouldn't you be a bit crabby in the mornings also?

So researchers agree that the way to combat such a problem is to reduce REM sleep, which goes contrary to what many of us learned in the psychology classes of the 1980s and early 90s when we were told all we needed was more REM. And, recent studies prove that these researchers are correct.

So, how do you reduce REM?

In sleep study labs, people who are woken up each time they go into REM sleep report less depression when they rise in the morning. But, this is hardly practical in everyday living. However some of the things that we can do to reduce REM are:

1. Have a little wine before bed
2. Up our intake of L-Tryptophan (small amounts are found in turkey and milk, but in order to reap the benefits, supplements are recommended)
3. Antidepressants of certain types
4. Any combination of the above

Of course it's not a license to become a wino or a pill popper. Instead, as with everything, moderation is the key.

But finally, there is hope.

Idiotnapping

There's a weird new service for rich Frenchmen who are jaded with the everyday thrills. It is no longer enough to take the chance of becoming another Sonny Bono (death by skiing) or a John Denver (death by plane).

No!

They now have the option to pay to be kidnapped.

Perhaps the Mexicans who are kidnapping Americans* just over the border and holding them for ransom have got it all wrong. They merely need to run an ad in the wealthiest parts of America:

Are you bored with your daily routine? Is paragliding or swimming with sharks no longer enough for you? Well, have we got the solution for you!

We guarantee a kidnapping by one (1) Mexican gang, run by at least one (1) certified drug lord. This kidnapping will involve a minimum of two (2) semi-automatic rifles, assorted handguns, and some showy "grenades" which will add to the thrill of it all as we grab you off Wall Street and transport you to a sunny bordertown in Mexico.

But that's just the beginning! Thrill to see what your loved ones will do for your release. Will your wife put up that $5 million? Will your parents appear on CNN, tearfully pleading for your safe return?

Call 1-800-IDIOT-NAP today!

Seriously: How exciting can it be to sign up for your own kidnapping? How can you get worked up about it when you already have your exit strategy planned? These morons can sign up for a helicopter "rescue", for crying out loud.

As if we didn't already think the French were beyond freakish...

More Aid Overseas

It seems the disaster season is upon us again. And whenever other countries are hit with a disaster, we gleefully saddle up and ride to their rescue. When we get there, we spend money like drunken sailors on shore leave and finally retire, happy with our emotional excesses and indulgences.

A little while ago, we enjoyed the tragedy in Haiti. Now we get to revel in the earthquake in Chile. I wonder how much money we'll spend this time?

The truth is that people love a good tragedy. The history of mankind proves this; Shakespeare's dramas, soap operas, the nightly news, court TV.

But we still feel a twinge of guilt: If we're going to watch the disaster unfold, blow-by-blow, perhaps we should do something to ameliorate the guilt. So we send money, which gives us the excuse to self-righteously proclaim that we "care", which in turn allows us to enjoy the disaster from the comfort of home.

The problem is that we are currently in great distress, a vast number of us are unemployed, homes continue to go into foreclosure, and there's no end in sight.

This is certainly no time to send money overseas.
