The Marine Who Killed the Puppy

Yesterday we were treated to the story and accompanying video of a Marine tossing a beautiful puppy over a cliff to its death.

Some psychologists are weighing in on this by justifying it. We're told that this can be a reaction to the stress of having your life constantly in danger: In order to feel that you have some control, you attempt to dominate smaller and more helpless beings.

Aren't those very reasons shared by wife beaters everywhere?

"They're on such a power trip about what they're doing that it doesn't dawn on them how disgusting it is," said said David Spiegel, professor and associate chairman of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. "A person can get set to such levels of psychological arousal that ordinary life can seem kind of drab, and the only way to keep yourself feeling kind of good is to do things that are dangerous or anti-social."

I don't have my doctorate in psychology (it's in another field), but I was a counselor for a while and I am trained in general family counseling from a Christian perspective. What Spiegel says makes sense to me. And yet, there is something missing.

What is missing is the fact that there are many, many men and women in our armed forces who are not abusing others and are not tossing defenseless puppies over the cliff and laughing about it as they do so.

That takes a special kind of monster.

The kind of monster who's grip on reality was never strong. The kind of monster who will be a danger when he's re-admitted to American society.

And we should also worry about his compadres. People who are willing to witness (and even encourage) abuse are no better than the perpetrator. People like that aren't merely dim-witted followers. People like that also get a subversive thrill from the deed. They are a typical example of the type of men who won't actually rape a woman, but will watch her being raped.

Cheryl Araujo was the rape victim whose story was fictionalized in the movie The Accused (which starred Jodie Foster). She was raped in public on a pool table while patrons watched: Some even cheered her abusers on.

These particular lookers-on have the same weak, bullying mentality as the patrons in the pool hall. It allows others to do the dirty work while they revel in the aftermath. They are able to stand back and say (with great self righteousness) "But *I* didn't throw the puppy over the cliff" or "But *I* didn't actually put the noose around that black man's neck."

Such blind mob mentality concerns me, and it should concern you. It needs to concern us as a nation because these are the type of monsters that will eventually come home to America.

Are all service men and women of this loathsome character? Of course not!

But we need to prepare ourselves for the fact that there will be some people who didn't have a strong moral backbone to begin with, who got to explore killing and abusing when they were overseas on assignment. We need to start asking what the military is doing to screen our troops when they come home, so that further atrocities can be prevented.

And, of course, we need to discover who these particular Marines were, and we need to deal with them harshly so that they are an example to other troops and a signal to the world that we do not condone such soulless monstrosities.

So throwing a dog off a cliff is terrible, but blowing up a village and killing a hundred human beings makes you a.....WAR HERO! Yes, you would probably get a medal for that.

What kind of monster would toss a dog off a cliff? Good question. What kind of monster would enlist in the military, knowing full well that by doing so you will be sent off to someplace to kill people. Not that you MAY be sent off to kill people - this is more of a case where you know going in you WILL be sent to kill people. You even know where!

Sure, there is defending your Country. A worthy cause for sure. But at this point although we know what we are defending it from, we are not so sure who we are defending it from. It is not like the terrorists wear German SS uniforms and march around in snazzy boots. So is that guy over there one? I don't know. But he might be! And he is in a car! That car could have a bomb!! Better shoot the car and kill the driver just to make sure. And if the guy had nothing? Well he was probably a terrorist anyway. Right? And then if you decide not to shoot, and the guy in the car turns out to be a suicide bomber - is that any better? Hell no.

To be honest, if I were over there I would be shooting at whatever moved. I want to get home with all my body parts functioning. Being over there IS a very stressful situation where death lurks everywhere. Think of the worst job you ever had, with the biggest asshole boss, and then add in the very real possibility of sudden death. Then just for more fun, have at least one person in your office killed each day. Who is next? You? Bob from accounting? Someone else?

War is a horrible thing. It DOES mess with your brain. My mother's oldest brother was in Korea and to this day he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, having a war flashback dream. KOREA! That was a very long time ago. And still, to this day, the man has nightmares over it. After the war he hit the bottle really REALLY hard, and when that almost killed him he went to seminary school and became a Methodist Preacher.

My mom also has a friend married to a Vietnam veteran, and if he tries to quit smoking he has war flashback dreams. Really. He has tried to quit several times. But each time the same thing happens. Terrible war dreams. He wakes up screaming, not just in a sweat. Screaming and then crying. Who knows what kinds of horrible things he saw and did over there. He will not speak about it to anyone - not even his wife or children.

So yes, this war is screwing people up. And then there is the possible exposure to the depleted uranium, which the military claims is harmless. Just like Agent Orange was harmless. Except for the kids being born today with no arms and legs of different sizes. Other than that, it was harmless. We know that regular war with only lead messed with people's heads, who knows what happens when depleted uranium is added to the equation. Or what untold effects the depleted uranium is Iraq will do to future generations of people born there - or to our guys on the ground now. There are young women over there. Women that may have kids when they return home.

These guys will come home one day. At least I hope they do. The longer we stay, the more young men will be messed up in the head. So how many puppy killers are we creating, that will come home to the USA and then be expected to function like nothing happened? But something did happen. And what happened can not just be forgotten.

Everyone likes to talk about the cost of war in terms of dollars. Well I say fuck the dollars. What about the cost of the war in human terms?

The dead puppy is just the very tip of the iceberg here.

Lazy Iguana, Let me tell you where I stand with American soldiers and GIs.

If you kill in time of war while participating in war, and your enemy is either obviously the enemy (such as someone coming at you with a gun or a bomb) or a terrible mistake (you kill someone you THINK is truly a threat and they turn out not to be) then you get a pass from me.

Ultimately the REAL problem for a soldier comes from the strain of trying to do the right thing and sometimes doing the wrong one accidentally. BUT, as we know from the Vietnam war, there have been times when soldiers were ordered to do the wrong things and were faced with the terrible decision of doing the wrong thing or rebelling against a commanding officer.

For some Christians such as the Quakers and Mennonites, "Thou shalt not kill" applies to war as well as peaceful living. And perhaps it is for this very reason: In real life, there are too many shades of gray.

You are right about how horrible war is, and the psychological effects cannot be discounted. One of my own uncles is nuttier than a fruitcake to this day after his brush with Vietnam.

You're right about the cost of war in human terms - and the VA hospitals are over-worked and rather poorly run as it IS.

Anon, I take it you have a vested interest in this. Yup, he's a heartless ass (as you say). Yup, there are tons of strays killed all the time.

I hope you're smart enough to understand this. Please tell me if I need to say this any simpler than I will now attempt to say it:

Strays are not simply 'killed'. They're put to sleep when necessary. They aren't terrorized and then dropped off steep cliffs.

Heartless asses are the ones that do such crimes. And, heartless asses are the ones that should pay for them.
