Lowry Park Zoo

Over the Labor Day Weekend, we went to nearby Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida. One of the people that went with us is a young lady that I've helped raise for the last 7 years. She loves photography, so I gave her her first digital camera and this is the result. We had a wonderful time and I thought I'd share some of our photos with you!

Some of those animals look lazy.

m@, they are. I think they sit around all day thinking of their next meal. Kinda like the average human, huh? :D

Your zoo has penguins? That is not fair. Miami Metro Zoo does not. Nor does it have Biscayne Bay Speed Bumps (aka west indian manatee).

Speaking of bay speed bumps, November 15 begins manatee season here. Worst time of the year. There are so many slow zones it takes forever to get anywhere. I wish those things were not in FL waters. But they are.

I never tire of going to the zoo and spending an afternoon or entire day. I just wish I could do it more often.

Ed, Lowry Park Zoo has been named as one of the top family zoos in the nation. It's really an amazingly wonderful zoo, and very pretty, too.

Lazy, yeah - but those manatees are SO VERY CUTE. Lowry Park Zoo has a special program that rehabilitates the manatees that have been mutilated by careless boaters... you should see the scars. When they first started the program in the early 90s, they had one that had been torn up so badly, it was a miracle he was still alive. But he survived! :D You and SaurKid love penguins. SaurKid just couldn't get enough - he could've stood there all day if he'd been allowed. And these are African penguins, so they are more heat-tolerant. He told me all about them as we stood there... who knew?

Lowry park is great! We always manage to get there at least once while in the area.

I like penguins because they are not speed bumps in Biscayne Bay. There are some penguins that take the heat better than other penguins, but still - this is FLORIDA! I hope they have a powerful chiller for the penguin water.

Sea Word Orlando has a really cool penguin display. With snow and everything. They poop a lot.

And I hope they keep the boat strike manatees safely confined in the zoo. Releasing them back into the wild is really asking for trouble.

It is VERY HARD to spot a manatee in the water. They move slow. A boater needs not be "careless" to hit one. While it is true that observing the idle speed and slow speed zones help a great deal, it is not a given that you will not run one over. And even if you are going slow, or are in idle, you can still hit one and injure it.

Manatee season is about to start here. November 11 is the day all the speed zones go into effect.
