A Little This & That

BugEyes

BugEyes is delighted that she got as many responses as she did. Thank you for bearing with her. Incidentally, I'm worried that it may go to her head. She's talking about writing a short story for Woman's Day titled "Some Like it Ruff," based on Senor Caiman's comment in yesterday's post.

Flu Shot Season

It's flu shot season again. Please, for your sake and the sake of others, consider getting one this year. I get one every year and it's worth it! I remain functional while everyone else around me starts dropping like flies.

Adventures in Babysitting

I've been doing a little babysitting lately. A woman that I used to work with has popped back unexpectedly into our lives. "Jana" has two kids; a 13-year old girl ("Cameron") and a 3-year old boy ("Justin").

Jana is currently in hiding from her ex-husband, who molested Cameron for 3 years before Jana found out. Because I'm one of the few people that owns her own business and can be flexible, I'm able to take Cameron and Justin when Jana needs someone to watch them.

Jana is currently very worried that her ex will find out where they live because it would be very tempting for him to simply kill Cameron to keep her from testifying against him. Her testimony is the strongest part of the case against him.

Is My Life a Soap Opera?

Based on the story of Jana, my mother says that my life has become a soap opera recently. I told her that in my experience, everyone has rough spots in their journey through life. I seem to specialize in being the road paver.

Zen Buddhist

My assistant, Zen, and her son Now (get it? Now & Zen? I slay myself!) will be staying with me for several days (due to her struggle with diabetes, she's had some serious financial problems). After that, they will be living with Jana. It's going to be an ideal arrangement for everyone. Now & Zen make instant babysitters, and add additional security.

I don't think my mom is ready to hear about Now & Zen yet.

The Weather

This is the time of year in Florida where you go outside and thank God you're alive. The weather is crisp and cool (in the 70s) with a nice light breeze but enough strong sunshine to cut the chill. If it was like this all the time, we'd call it paradise and we'd be so flooded with tourists that Florida would tip over and fall into the ocean.

My Links

I recently revised my links slightly, excluding those people that have dropped off the face of the earth. If you'd like to be included, or if you think I've made a mistake, please let me know.

mmmmmm, maybe you should open "Hotel Saur"? Your Mom is right, sometimes our lives do resemble a soap opera.

"crisp and cool (in the 70's)" GRRRRRRR *L* Oh well, no gators around here anyway

"crisp and cool (in the 70's)"

Spoken like a true Floridian. I remember coming down to Orlando to visit my grandparents and to see the 500 race and the temps were forecasted to be "in the 70's". My grandmother reminded me to take a jacket. Up here, we don't put on jackets until the temps are (in the 50's).

Ahhh. The first cool snap of the season. A GREAT time to kill the AC, open the windows, and beat the crap out of the sofa to let all the dust out. A Florida tradition.

By the way, did you change anything other than your links? The "leave a comment" link is suddenly screwed up. It could just be my computer having a windows moment - but it seems to not be.

UPDATE! It was just the laptop having a windows moment. Move along now! Nothing to see here!

I never bother with the flu shot, and I also stay healthy. I credit the exercise and Japanese food.

I get the flu shot every year, we get the free!!

Perhaps you should come over here. My house may feel like a vacation.

I've never had a flu shot and haven't had the flu in years! I think I'm gonna have to stay with my trend and hope my luck hangs on!

It does sound a bit like a soap opera!
Well, at least it is not a dull life!

Good luck to your friend.
Have a great weekend sweetie!

I hope Jana's ex-husband doesn't read your blog, he would know where to find her. Good luck with helping her out. She's lucky to have a good friend like you.

The weather in Texas was awesome today. A Canadian front pushed thru yesterday and it was nice and cool. The sky was a beautiful blue and it felt like fall.

My husband's parents live in Vero Beach and simply love it down there.

Does it get really cold in your neck of the woods ?? Do you get snow ?? I know we don't !!! we are having record high temps at the moment ... a heat wave (although it is pleasant again this weekend). The warmest temp (almost 37ºC) since records began. How bizarre !!
Have a great weekend.
Take care, Meow

Oh I remember Florida winters! We hit the 30's last night! Can you say Brrrr!

You do take on a lot of helping others and I can agree with your mom that your life is a soap opera. But I do agree with you we all have a soap opera life at one time or another! I would just prefer mine to be on some exotic vacation reliving the first few days of love! ;) But that is not to be!

Oh my link is broken. It goes to my old blog address!

The only time I ever got a flu shot was when I was in the Army and they made us take it. I got the flu. Never took one again and generally don't get the flu or too sick.

Debbie, see my comment in your blog today as to why I didn't change your link yet. If you still want me to, let me know. Oh yeah, I'm in on the exotic vacation. Where can I sign up for THAT soap?

Meow, usually it doesn't get colder than in the 40s at it's worst. Our hottest temp is mostly in the 80s to 90s and that can go on for months. Our coldest is the 40s, but dropping to freezing can happen at least a couple days every winter. Usually our winters are in the 40s and 50s, ranging from December through February. I hate hate hate that cold.

Lucy Stern, that's one reason I fight so hard to keep my absolute anonymity. Also, sad to say, Jana's story isn't uncommon. There would be a lot of frustrated child molestors reading that and trying to figure out if they were the ones mentioned in my story.

LeeAnn, you too, hon!

Nihilistic, well, you're appallingly athletic. You'll probably be just fine!!!

Michelle, oh believe you me... I'm about to impose. I need the break!!!

Grant, sushi kills germs? I have a new excuse for my addiction!

Lazy Iguana, *LOL*

Ed, ;o) Yeah, you can tell I'm a native, huh? We tell everyone we have "orange juice" in our veins.

Mal, yes, being gator-free has its advantages. If you wanna see some cool gator pics, go to the Lazy Iguana's picture collection of the everglades, which he took on a mini vacation!

Herb, you're certainly sturdy!!! :D

I can certainly see where Bug Eyes would want her own forum.... especially if she has such a good teacher as you. The first blog post was great! Was it ever decided between the kibbles or bits? crunchy or chewy?

Isn't the weather just right? I woke up this morning and it was 69 degrees outside. I immediately opened up all the windows.

Today was a beautiful crisp fall day. Perfect weather for New England this time of year. Though I'm constantly reminded that winter is on the way....

Herb said...

Yeah, I actually am pretty healthy, even though I don't really do anything special to stay that way. It's a blessing.

You remind me a lot of my parents, always taking people in. I think it requires a lot of self-sacrifice and unselfishness in order to take care of other people. And your mom is wrong, in Soap Opera's there is rarely anyone with character or enough heart to allow someone to live with them or to take care of people that need it.
