Reality Shows

One of my friends, Back To Basics (B2B) and I were talking on the phone this evening. "Oh, I can't forget to catch that new INXS rock star show tonight," she exclaimed. We had discussed America's obsession with reality TV shows before, and she had suggested that I blog about it.

I have to admit that I originally distainfully announced that this INXS show was just about as low as TV could get. And then I turned around and watched the second episode (I missed the first one). "I'll just watch a little," I promised myself, "just so I know what I'm talking about." And I ended up enthralled. It's bad enough that I like Hell's Kitchen, now I'm watching this show. What's next? Survivor? The Real Gilligan's Island? I have never sunk that low. Yet...

It can't be healthy. I find myself talking to the TV. "You have got to be kidding," I'll say. "He isn't wearing a shirt? How lame is that? Who is he fooling?" or "Ow, her voice is awful. How did she ever qualify? C'mon you idiots, tell her to forget it..." So far I have been able to restrain from calling in my vote. I refuse to buy into it that much. But I'm tempted, sorely tempted.

Well, you could go for "Survivor, Gilligans Island" followed by a 24 Hr marathon of the original "Gilligans Island"......"just sit right back and you will hear a tale........."

What is INXS?

I do have a few shows I watch, General Hospital and One Life to Live, and a few others like Six Feet Under. I don't usually base my evening on TV. I used to, but I have realized that I don't feel as if I have used the day to it's fullest extent if I sit in front of the TV. Also, I have DVR, which works out nicely for the soaps since I work, and it makes it easy for me to ff through to all the main points. For every hour of GH and OLTL I usually only watch about 15-20 minutes. I jump forward until I see something of interest to me.

I won't be able to watch tonight because I am going to a friends house to BBQ and play trivia. I will look for it and try and DVR it though.

Back, thank you for the info.

Sauer--I wished I could watch something cool like them boys in INXS.

Darlene makes me watch those people dance the cha-cha around in their underwear and everybody says how good or awful they were.

And not one of them was even drinking as far as I could see. What kind of dancing is that?

Mallory, Thanks! It's not me, like the blue/green pic was, but I've always liked the painting and I think she conveys the spirit of the blog. As for Gilligan's Island, if I had to watch it for that long they'd have to take my shoelaces away from me...

Anonymous, I am not at all sure what you're talking about. However, you have my greatest sympathy. The only people I would ever want to see prancing about in their underwear would be Jeff Goldblum or Mel Gibson. Not together, I should add. But in your position, I wouldn't have worried about them drinking: *I* would have been drinking.

B2B ACK! You're a GH fan??? And you're a close friend of mine...I may have to arrange an intervention program for you. Although I admit I watched it for a short time myself and it was rather addicting. Along with *gulp* Beverly Hills 90210. I am ashamed to admit it.

Fred, I know where you're coming from. I watch very little TV. I went for years without a TV in my house, but ended up bowing to the others who invaded my peaceful little homelife and insisted on civilization. Now I have 3 of the hellish things to disrupt my peace wherever I go in the house.

B2B...please do not tell me you were/are a Monkees fan too? AAAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! I can't stand it!!

I was watching Hell's Kitchen out of curiosity. DH was in the other room and could hear all the *bleeping* and came in to ask "What ARE you watching?" He was pretty annoyed by it and walked away.

But the next time it came on he sat down and watched it. lol

B2B & Mallory, I blushingly admit that I was a Monkees fan. The Ultimate in Geekdom.

Dddragon, that is funny, because Saurkid has watched it a couple times with us. The other night he complained "Oh great, I get to hear "what the bleep are you bleepin doing?" every other sentence." I'm only glad he really said 'bleep'.

Reality TV is kind of like WalMart. I don't particularly like it, my higher self believes I am above it but sometimes I'm like Michael Corleone...Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

B2B, I have to confess, if I am home or on the road alone, I typically surf the web. Of late I have been getting addicted to Blogs..imagine that....one of the many changes as we have become empty nester 1's and still very active in our careers...I really do not know what is on TV....Although I have been following LeTour

I am not loving the inxs show, maybe because I like classic rock (what I call classic anyway) very much, and frankly think these lugs are just messing up good songs.

I dont know that an 18 year old girl from LA can handle an Rem song from 1987, etc...

These performers just dont do it the right way. They do the modern, over the top, way. Without quality, the flashy style.

Saur, it's not the TV show that I wonder about--when do you find time to watch it? While scanning and posting to all of your blogs? Are there TWO of you?!

I used to make fun of my friends that watched soaps! I had a friend come and stay with me for a few months, and she watched OLTL and GH and one or two others. I got hooked on GH. I can't seem to get away from it. I almost look forward to it. I know, I know, I need help.

I have watched HK a few times and I think it is hilarious how these people take his crap.

90210 was in my time, I loved it when it was on. *cringes*

Bill R Nope, not two of me, but I type 80 wpm and think fast. I also watch TV while blogging sometimes. So I multitask (I get bored easily, can you tell?) ;o)

Alex, Yeah, I admit that a lot of the time I'm staring incredulously at the screen wondering what on earth made someone think they should try that. But that's part of the fun. That and the idiot famous guitarist whatsisname who looks like a gay version of Faust and drools over every girl onstage(?) He wears more makeup than *I* do and has more furs than Elton John. I don't care how famous he is, he's a dork.

Christopher Trottier & Godless Mom, thanks for popping in. My Dr. Jekyll agrees with you. My Mr. Hyde is surfing the channels.

Utter Chaos, you got it!!!

Mallory, Bobby Sherman. Ow.

Smilesalot, Whew. You too? If reality TV is like Walmart (as Barbara says) what are soaps? ;o)

Saur♥Kraut said...

B2B me too! Half the time the kids were sitting next to me, rolling their eyes and doing the 'gag me' gesture (finger in mouth).

TV is bad for you.

Daniel, ain't it the truth...

I just watched 30 Days, a great show! The same guy did Super Size Me. It comes on Wed. nights at 9 Central on FX. A great show. He puts people outside of their box and they experience things they wouln't usually experience.

Hah! Welcome to the pop culture...

I think just because you call in your vote doesn't mean you are a part of the vacuous culture. We all have the right, after all, to be a fool for five minutes, no?:-) At least that's what Dale Carnegie, of How to Win Friends and Influence People, said.

I agree wholeheartedly...:-)

Saur♥Kraut said...

Emmanuel, you are right my friend. We all have the right to temporary weaknesses. What shows are you addicted to?

B2B, if he is, it will be hard for him to catch his faves while he's on the road! *g*

Yes I watch INXS again.

Better this week. I liked Jordis, Mig, Ty, and Marty this week.
