My First Day on My Own

Monday is the start of my new business. Although I'll be doing the same things I've always done, I'll do it without a safety net now.

Owning your own business has both good and bad points. The good: You get to do what you want, when you want (within reason) and you are in total control of your own destiny. The bad: You don't have the big corporation to rely on, there is no more support staff (unless you hire them yourself) and you are suddenly in charge of all the little things you never had to worry about before.

I have everything in place, and people eager to do business with me. I will succeed. But it is still scary. I look back to the time when I was a little girl (and in many ways I am still that little girl). I never imagined I would be doing this. By now, I thought I would have my first novel published. Instead, I have a much more lucrative opportunity. I am living the American Dream.

You are going to do great! No doubt about it!

Yes, you will succeed. We're all pulling for you and wish you the very best.

Funny happenings re: the weekend story. I posted at literally the same time as Tabasamu. When I visited a few hours later, I saw we both were the first contibutors. So, I deleted mine, and changed it a bit to fit into hers.

Just use us for your first novel. You start the chapter, and we'll finish it!

Seriously, best of luck.

I know it can be scary, but you have all the talent to pull it off.

Good luck!

I'll be joining you in the ranks of the self employed soon. Mind if I use you as a bellweather?

I've been self-employed for as long as I can remember, best way to be. Enjoy it and don't work too hard.

Off topic but value your thoughts: any feelings on the fresh torture photos and US troops selling pics for porn access?

Go Saur! You are doing it!

I applaud people who can step out and take that risk, I plan to do it myself someday!

Daniel, Thanks, hon! I haven't had time to check your blog. Hope you're having a ball with the new play! I'll check out your story and let you know what I think of it. I appreciate your giving me the heads up.

Pirate, sure! I am in sales/consulting work. Let me know what you're thinking about and I'll be happy to discuss it w/ you! If you'd prefer to email me, let me know.

Kathleen, Fred and Michelle, thanks so much. I appreciate the well-wishes and encouragement. You know, it's funny - we may have all met via the internet (though Michelle and I are now close friends in the 'real world' too) but everyone definately is important to me and I view you as important as my other friends. So again, thank you.

Fred, I noticed that too! It was a fun story again. I couldn't resist the pun at the end...

Eddo, funny! I thought you basically WERE on your own doing web design.

You got all your little ducks in a row (niggling taxes, insurance of a variety of kinds, who's the backup if you get sick, etc. ad nauseum)? I once helped a guy who was in self-employed status, and this little crap (filings, bookwork) seemed to take a quarter of the time.

Aw, sure you do. You're plenty smart.

I am back by the way :)

You go girl!

I'm a retired accountant, so I have this tiny piece of advise:
Save every single piece of paper! Your accountant will need it all.

Did you incorporate? Bigger taxes, but safer personally.

Good luck to you! I am confident that you will do very well!

Is anon for real?

LOL. Work a little harder Saur. Brother Crowley want some more of your money.

Anon was being weirder than I wanted to have to deal with, so I deleted it. Sorry, Anon.

Everyone, thank you so much.

TLP and Old Hoss, I am getting conflicting accounting advice. One says go S-Corp to save on social security taxes (which won't be around when I'm old anyway). Another says avoid incorporating if at all possible. Any thoughts?

Ajay, where HAVE you BEEN?
