Do you know why the night before Christmas is called Christmas Eve? After all, if eve is short for evening, why wouldn't Christmas Eve be the night of December 25?
Because early church fathers followed the judaic tradition of reckoning a 'day' as beginning the night before. For instance, the Jewish Sabbath began Friday night and ran through Saturday. And so Christmas actually began the evening of the 24th; Christmas Eve.

(Little man is beside himself today, please please make bedtime come fast!)
Well it's the afternoon of Christmas Eve...what would we call that? My guess is kids call it torture.
Happy holidays!
Saur, may the peace of Christ rest on you and your family during this most special of Christian holy days. God Bless!
Sam
Thanks for the lesson. I'll take the Porsche, please.
Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas! Have a blessed weekend.
A very Mery Christmas to you and your family... thanks for being our Christmas gift!
Merry Christmas, Saur. In the best sense. And, peace on earth and goodwill to men . . . I pray.
Merry Christmas Saur.
By the way, there is a Mel Fisher Treasure Museum on Sanibel Island and Key West. At either location you can see some Atrocha emeralds, 75 pound bricks of solid silver, gold bars bearing the mark of whatever king Spain had at the time, silver pieces o eight, and all sorts of stuff.
You can even buy some of the treasure, reproductions of the treasure, and stuff made from some of the silver bars that were melted down.
The Sanibel Island location also has a coin from Ancient Athens (Athena is on one side, the owl is on the other).
The Sanibel museum was there before Charlie, consult google to check that it is still there before you go.
Never thought about the CHristmas Eve thing before - interesting tidbit- funny cartoon...
According to etymonline.org and Take Our Word For It, the ancient meaning of "eve" doesn't just mean "evening" whether reckoning a day that begins at sundown or sunup. It has meant the entire day before a saint's day or festival since 1290. Of course, the word does come from "even," an abbreviated form of "evening."
Merry Christmas Saurkraut .. thanks for the history!
