Bush Waffles on Illegal Immigration

After 6 years of being pro-illegal immigration, Bush has finally felt the pressure. Yesterday, in a speech in Arizona, he caved. He spoke of how 'wrong' illegal immigration is, and his plans to 'toughen' the laws. But did anyone notice that he also slipped in the little idea that he will legally allow all current illegal aliens to get work permits to work here? Ah, but they won't be permanent, he hastens to add.

Look, we're still sanctioning illegal immigrants, then! For a supposedly Christian president, Bush continues to do his best to thwart the laws of the land and throw the average blue-collar American worker under the bus. Send jobs overseas! Legalize illegal immigrants so that businesses will continue to make their profits at the expense of the American worker!

I sometimes blush to admit that I'm a Republican. But I'm a good old-fashioned Reagan Republican, not one of these measley, two-faced whining neo-cons.

Bush is a sell-out, and he makes me sick. He sells out to all the interests that aren't representative of the American public: Big Oil, illegal immigrants, China... When will it all stop? In two more years! (as Zen Buddhist points out, who is looking over my shoulder as I type my daily rant).

P.S. Please stop by and say hi to Zen Buddhist (my assistant). She's started her own blog (titled 'Zen & Now') and you can find it in my links to the right. NOTE: We don't and won't always agree. In fact, I guarantee it! But that makes it more fun, doesn't it? ;o)

Interesting, Junior is doing some of the same things Slick used to. Pardoning illegal immigrants, easy on China etc..

I really hope the Republicans or the Democrats can put forward a candidate with character. Its been a while since we have seen one.

BTW..your blog on Blood Diamonds inspired one of my own *S*

Wow - pretty opinionated aren't you....I like it though. I dopn't pay as much attention to politics as I should, I'm growing up some, but it's a slow process, so I can't comment much on the subject...good read though.

Lava, ;o) Yeah, I guess I am. I've always been known for being opinionated but saying it with a smile. In my blog, it's kinda hard to get that across to people. I try not to offend but speak frankly (as the title suggests). I have friends both in and out of bloggerland that agree and disagree with me and we remain friends. I treasure people for their minds. We're all growing up, hon! Don't worry about it. And not everyone is interested in politics. But I think you'll get more interested as you grow older, because it (unfortunately) impacts us so much.

Mallory, wow! I'll go over and read your blog shortly. Glad to know I've inspired someone! Lazy Iguana just wrote an equally excellent post, too!

I agree with you. I will still pick Bush over Kerry any day, but I am not too sure about some of his choices... I am flummoxed by him.

Eddo, ditto! Oh, I am glad to see you back!!! You disappeared off the radar for a while!

I do not see how anyone can condone providing food stamps, health care and driving privilages to illegal immigrants when we can't provide for the citizens affected by this seasons diasaters and the veterans of our wars and the homeless among us.

Saying they do jobs Americans won't is bull, I have picked strawberries, apples, peaches and cucumbers, painted porches, mowed lawns, de-tassled corn, trimmed christmas trees and weeded gardens throughout my youth.

Kids and young adults will work if work is available. The pay is not as good as minimum wage but the work is healtier than sucking grease fumes at a burger joint.

Get real, yes we were all immigrants at one time ut the reality is that there are too many people and not enough jobs right now.

We can't take care of others if we don't take care of our own first.

I don't know crap about the politics of it, I know the kids down the street would go to bed hungry tonight if the family was not helping out. Their working mom makes too much money to get assistance of any kind and not enough to pay all her bills alone.

Rant over.

I am glad to see Bush moving towards actually doing somethiing about the borders and illegal immigration.
I hope he will put some moxy behind his words. This is an area that I have been disappointed in him about. After 9-11, he should have taken major steps in this area regardless of the political ramifications he may have feared. Most Americans would have supported an aggressive policy. Most politicians are afraid of this issue. A band aid just won't cut it.

It is simply too bad that Dubya can't say he was drunk all the time and didn't know what he was doing. Instead, he just has to say, "I was dumb all the time and didn't know what I was doing."

Went and visiting your Zenner. Will go back now and then, see if is good as you.

Old Hoss, you'll have to be the judge. She is wildly different in almost all ways, truthfully. For one thing, she believes strongly in UFOs. I think the jury's still out on that one, truthfully. I mean, if you can't believe in Jesus cuz you didn't see him, how can you believe in UFOs which you haven't seen? But, we have always risen above our differences and have been good friends for 4 years. And she'll happily explain her side, I'm sure!

Jamie Dawn, yes. We see eye-to-eye again.

Valerie, exactly! And they never pay any sort of taxes that would ameliorate the burden we face in taking care of them.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Yeeesh. I was just redundant and said truthfully twice. Bleah.

I'm surprised Bush hasn't taken a harder line on immigration all these years. Too little, too late.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Fred, exactly. It's now obvious that the only reason he's doing it is due to public pressure and The Minutemen.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Tabasamu, I know. I just saw the new recipe. Yum! I also see you changed some colors, it's very festive looking! ;o)

Bush waffles? No way! That would imply he is wrong about stuff!

I can proudly say that it is not my fault. I never voted for the dude. Not that I liked the other guys that much - it was a comparitive thing. I asked myself, "who is the bigger goober" and "would the lesser goober do a worse job". Then I decided to vote for the lesser of two goobers.

TLP said...

Well, I can't stand Bush, and never could. I've never understood his stand on the illegals. It doesn't seem like something that he would support.

Saurkraut - You're awesome. Wonderful post.

Bush is taking a page from Al Gore's book. Any way the wind blows, huh? I hate the neo-Cons.

Don't be ashamed of being a Republican. I like Republicans. I wish they'd get their heads out of their you know whats and become Republicans again instead of this neo-Con crap.

Daniel Hoffmann-Gill said...

Saur: you bring this up a lot and I'll be honest; the issue makes my skin crawl.

You see, turning round and making a target out of immigrants is not a good thing in my book, I think it masks something else; whether that be the current economical woes of the US, the bite in the individuals pocket.

What seems to be under a lot of this though (we have a similar raft of opinion that is obsessed with asylum seekers 'stealing jobs' ' stealing benefits' and generally being to blame for most things wrong) is the need for a target, a scapegoat.

Now I'm not expecting anyone here to hold up their hands and say YES I NEED A WHIPPING BOY TO BLAME AND THOSE DAMN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE THE BASTARDS TO GET IT and I expect the majority to write very reasoned and proper repostes but my gut tells me that it's wrong.

People seek to escape their homeland for many reasons, infact you'll all know this better than me as your ancestors built a country for those turfed out or un welcome at home, to turn and blame them for the woes of a great nation crippled by a fiscal incompetent and a political party that only has eyes for the well off (and stop all this neo-con crap: they are Republicans!) seems strange.

Peace.

I agree that illegals are a problem. But don't you agree that the main reason they are allowed here is indeed economic? Cheap labor is lost if not for illegals. If we'd quit paying legal residents to do nothing (welfare) we might see a change in the economic dynamics that draw illegal residents here in the first place. This sounds hard hearted to many, but it is actually true compassion. I wish Bush would've put compassionate conservatism into policy without ever telling people he was doing it or was going to do it. It is best seen in action not spoken of in theory.

Old Man Rich said...

Illegal imigrants? Like your founding fathers?

Yup. Send en all back & return America to the Amerinds.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Old Man Rich, nope. Not like the Founding Fathers. The reason they're called illegal is because there's a legal way to get in. You can't have dark without light...you know...?

Danny Sims, well, we'll never know until it's put into practice, will we? There are many Americans who would be able to fill the gaps that the illegals currently fill. The difference is the employer who would have to pay taxes on a legal worker.

Daniel, I know it does. I know it's a point we don't agree on. And I've listened to your arguments before. I have to say that I think you continue to misunderstand the situation. It's not that anyone's looking for a scapegoat (at least IMHO). Instead, the illegals are here simply due to greed. It's cheaper for businesses to hire the illegals, pay no taxes on them, and the costs for their healthcare and whatnot are passed directly to the American consumer in higher taxes. I have no problem with legal aliens of any color and have even dated some. And let me point out that my best friend, Ozma, is a Mexican American. But her family is here legally.

Zombieslayer, ;o) Ta, my friend.

TLP, yeah, we see eye-to-eye on this.

Lazy Iguana, we see this identically and even have the same voting perspective. The only diff is that I DID vote for Bush. But I did it while holding my nose.

Sorry Saur, I nearly smashed my PC to pieces when I read Danny Sims comment about removing welfare. Paying people to sit ontheir ass and other urban myths. Welfare is never enough to live on, only a small majority abuse the system. Why is it that people always turn to attack the weakest? I remember now, it's because they are easy targets.

I know we've debated this a lot and I'm grateful for you tolerating my views on here and in many ways we agree. I agree that it is businesses taking on these workers that is a problem but we do not punish the businesses we punish or target the people, why? See the reason I have given above for picking on those on welfare.

Businessess taking on these workers is down to the profit margin, we want cheap things and then there is the root cause: capitalism, a system based on fiscal gain over all other criteria.

But instead we blame the weak people at the bottom of the chain rather than turning our sites to the top.

Peace.

Saur♥Kraut said...

Daniel, I think that our current welfare system has been revamped to a point where you are now correct - but at one time (in the 80s and earlier) there really
WERE a lot of what they then called "Welfare Queens".

These were people that made a fortune on the system and hadn't worked a day in their lives. Now we have a return-to-work program where everyone, even those with minimal skills, is trained to do something that will get them off the welfare rolls. It was a reform that was a long time coming! But now I have to agree with you.

we want cheap things and then there is the root cause: capitalism Yes, unfortunately you're right.

Daniel Hoffmann-Gill said...

'Welfare Queens' sounds like a title to a blue movie.
